cal crutchlow le mans 2012

It was truly soaking wet at Le Mans in this morning’s warm-up practice and for the MotoGP riders it was their first session at the Bugatti circuit to find a proper rain set-up and test which tires they could have to use if the weather stays the same for this afternoon’s race.

A super fast Cal Crutchlow posted the best time and this not withstanding that he binned his satellite Yamaha M1 on his first lap out at the Dunlop, but a three lap run in the low 1.46s makes him an almost sure podium contender. His 1’46″095 lap was enough to keep Casey Stoner in second and at bay by just 0.092s.

Pole sitter Dani Pedrosa was third followed by Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden. The factory Ducati riders proved once again that their Desmosedici is much easier to ride in the wet, but still can’t explain why.

Jorge Lorenzo was sixth with yesterday’s impressive Andrea Dovizioso in seventh, but one second off pace. Hector Barbera, Karel Abraham on their satellite Ducati’s were 8th and 9th respectively and they were faster than Yamaha factory rider Ben Spies who closed out the top ten.

The rain could actually see some of the CRT riders enter the top ten this afternoon. Danilo Petrucci was 11th with his Ioda TR003 who placed his Superstock Aprilia RSV4 ahead of Alvaro Bautista on Gresini’s Honda and Stefan Bradl who was only 16th, but probably suffering from the after effects of his leg and hip injury picked up in yesterday’s qualifying crash.

Yonny Hernandez was another rider who crashed during the wet practice and he ended up last unable to return to track with his Kawasaki.
