Following Italy’s new earthquake on Tuesday, the second in less than a month, that further devasted the Emilia region, one of the most industrialized and productive area of the country (1% of GNP) and claimed another 17 lives (mostly workers who were back at their jobs and repairing the previous damages) and has left 15,000 homeless, the Italian government has decided to add another tax hike on gas of 2 cents plus VAT to help fund quake relief.
In the last twelve months, between the Berlusconi and the now very unpopular Monti governments has raised taxes on the cost of gasoline six times, but this time it seems that this newest hike will be limited to December 31st, but we’re not counting on it, as Italian taxpayers are still paying for Mussolini’s war in Abyssinia (now Ethiopia), to previous peace missions in Lebanon, Bosnia and every natural disaster in its past and recent history.
