vinales assen 2012

Assen is called the cathedral of motorcycling racing and today’s Moto3 race proved that the small class has no problems with the circuit as they offered fans a highly entertaining, sloppy and immensely battled out races of the season that saw Maverick Vinales take a masterful victory, his fourth of the season after battling it out with Sandro Cortese, Danny Kent and Louis Salom into the final turns of the race.

The lead swapped hands several times, as one of the biggest groups of riders ever seen (more than fifteen) battled it out for the top positions for almost half the race distance, before Vinales, Ajo team-mates Danny Kent and Sandro Cortese, RW’s Luis Salom and Team Germany rider Louis Rossi managed to break away from the rest of the field, but between errors and fairing bashing battles (between the Ajo team mates) the lead again changed hands so many times they were almost impossible to count.

With just two laps Vinales was leading, but an error going into turn 1 let both KTM Red Bull riders through and the battlecontinued between the four as Rossi began to fade slightly. Going into the last lap Kent was leading followed by Cortese, Vinales, and Salom. Cortese made his first move at the Ruskenhoek, while Vinales tried to grab the second spot only to find Salom taking his place and then with an incredible move moved to the front of the race on the penultimate turn but a costly error at the final chicane saw Vinales sweeping through with a slingshot move and ride across the line ahead of Sandro Cortese.

A photo finish analysis was needed to decide who got the third place between Salom and Kent, and it was the Brit who was awarded the podium taking his best ever in his GP career finish leaving a disappointed Salom in fourth.

Louis Rossi took fifth followed by Alex Rins who managed sixth after mid race error, Caretta Technology’s Alexis Masbou, Nicklas Ajo, JHK T-Shirt Laglisse’s Efrén Vázquez and Rins’ teammate Miguel Oliveira closed out the top ten.
