Today’s Moto3 race at Sachsenring was probably one of the toughest races that the lower class has had so far this season. The race was delayed for 25 minutes as a battering rainstorm hit the circuit flooding it. After waiting for the rain to abate, the race started with all the riders on rain tires.
However the race was 2 in one, with wet weather specialists like Adrian Martin and Jack Miller leading the race with Louis Rossi, Luis Salom and Brand Binder following until a dry racing line started forming and flying up the field came both Alexis Masbou and pole sitter Sandro Cortesewho were both outside the top five until the conditions slowly improved.
The two, Masbou ahead of Cortese, charged to make up the massive six seconds that separated them from the lead group and two laps later caught them. One swooping lap later Masbou grabbed the lead, with Cortese following him but they couldn’t yet escape as a seven way battle began but as the sun began shining further improving the track conditions the two broke away with only Luis Salom able to hold their pace as everyone’s rain tires began to suffer and Cortese began searching for some wet spots too cool them down.
With three laps left in the race Cortese grabbed the lead from Masbou and in the penultimate lap set his fastest race lap that would let him keep the Carretta Technology rider at bay at take the victory - his second this season and also grab the lead in the standings as Maverick Vinales could only finish in 17th after losing a four-way battle.
Masbou with his second place took his first ever GP podium, while a disappointed Luis Salom took third and boiling over engine for the effort, and losing a second engine in two races. Australian Jack Miller took fourth after Rossi crashed out, while Efren Vazquez and Zulfahmi Khairuddin were fifth and sixth respectively.
Hector Faubel rode to seventh and he fought back to the position after having had to start in the pitlane when his Kalex FTM stalled on the starting grid.
Wildcard Luca Grünwald took 8th graced with this position after Louis Rossi, Brad Binder and Adrian Martin who lead the race early on, crashed out. Arthur Sissis came in ninth followed by Jakub Kornfeil who was fast all weekend but ended up closing out the top ten and more than 29 seconds from Cortese.
