The slightly higher temperatures at the short and twisty Laguna Seca circuit saw lap times drop accordingly in the second free practice and Dani Pedrosa was again the fastest rider as he set his best lap time on his 11th and posting a 1.21.088 with his new 2013 machine.
This time Jorge Lorenzo wasn’t right behind him as he was 0.344s adrift from the Repsol Honda rider, with the first six positions on the timesheets the same as this morning. Casey Stoner took third and he was right on the standings leader’s tail, and he’ll probably have something to say to the much slower wildcard rider Steve Rapp that made him abort his last flying lap as he ran off track at turn 4, but he also previously took a ride through the gravel trap at the Andretti Hairpin. Ben Spies was fourth while Yamaha Tech3 duo Andrea Dovizioso and Cal Crutchlow were fifth and sixth respectively with the British rider more than one second off pace.
Crutchlow was also a victim of a hugh speed crash while he was on a flying lap and ended up with his M1 in several pieces and torn leathers on his right thigh. Just three minutes later Valentino Rossi also binned his Ducati at turn 3 in the direction change (it was probably due to a cold right side of the tire) as he touched the brakes and lost the front of his machine which ended up against the air fence. The session to be red flagged to subsitute the section of the ripped fence. Rossi end up 9th and a massive 1.6 seconds off pace.
Nicky Hayden who renewed with Ducati this morning was 7th followed by Stefan Bradl and Alvaro Bautista who rounded out the top ten after suffering a crash about halfway through the practice.
Power Electronics Aleix Espargaro and Randy de Puniet were the fastest CRT riders (the Frenchman was just 0.035s from his Spanish team mate) after de Puniet’s team fixed the electronics problem that hindered him this morning. Toni Elias on the satellite Ducati was 15th while Karel Abraham on the other satellite Italian prototype was 16th.
