We’re starting up a series of posts on some of the wonderful motorcycle tours around the world, and we want to hear from you about your favourite places to go with your two wheels. Today, we kick off with an itinerary from Giuseppe Guarnaschelli, who takes us round a part of Italy’s incredible landscape.
The trip took place in December after a lot of rain, providing for some interesting terrain, going to 1,400 metres at the Matese Lake. After a morning coffee the trip starts near the Roman acqueduct, but the fun doesn’t really commence until you get to Piedimonte Matese.
The mountain road is perfect for motorcycle with asphalt in excellent condition and some exciting cornering, though temperatures are a little on the fresh side at this time of year. Plenty of impressive landscape can be taken in, and on one stop even some horses were spotted on the side of the road, enjoying the mountain air.
With some snow on the ground, the temperature was certainly low but the lake is not far away at this stage. On reaching the destination, the lake proves really beautiful, though getting around it proved easier on foot. The best thing about this trip was the solitude - just you and your bike to enjoy the surroundings.
You can descend the mountain on the other side, meaning you don’t have to retrace your steps, and in so doing enter Molise. The only other vehicles met on the road were a couple of BMW GS 1200, showing that this was definitely a road for motorcyclists.
The landscape, seen in these shots, is truly lovely and even some autumnal colours were still around at the time of the trip. For lunch, Italy’s motorcycle tours and itineraries certainly have plenty of options, but in this case a packed lunch in the forest was fitting for the day’s activity.
After lunch the highest point in the road is reached, meaning some more photos, and more wildlife is encountered, this time some cows in the middle of the road. At least getting past them on a bike is easier. On losing some altitude, the snow disappears and you can really enjoy the ride in warmer temperature.
Some last photos can be taken when stopping at Telese Terme, or Telese Baths, where you can stop for coffee and a snack before heading home. The Lago del Matese, in Piedimonte Matese, is a mountain lake in Campania, in Italy’s south. Enjoy the photos, and for more information check out traveljournals.net.
