The fifth stage of the Dakar Rally was overshadowed by the death of French motorcyclist Pascal Terry, but Team Double Diamond Rally PanAM KTM’s Jonah Street won the first-ever Dakar Rally stage of his career. Street won stage 5 (506 km) between Neuquen and San Rafael with a 7:34-minute advantage over Chilean Francisco Lopez and a 11:12 minute advantage over French David Fretigne.

Leader Marc Coma had a bad performance after suffering a puncture after 45kms which forced him to lose 15:45 minutes in relation to winner Street; he finished ninth in stage 5, though he still leads in the general standings.

Street has cut his overall lead down to 27′12 at the end of Stage 5. David Frétigné took third place this stage and is now at 39’09″ behind first place.

After five stages, Marc Coma (KTM) is the leader at the bike race with 21h, 38m, 12s, followed by Street (27 minutes, 12 seconds behind) and Yamaha rider Fretigne (39 minutes, 9 seconds behind).
