While most MotoGP riders are getting back into shape and having some friendly neighbourhood motocross races with friends, preparing for the next official tests that will start at Sepang in Malaysia on February 5, Bradley Smith, MotoGP’s newest rookie will actually be racing in the second round of the Qatar International Championship (QIRRCH) double header that takes place January 11th and 12th at the Losail Circuit in Qatar.
Smith will be riding a Yamaha YZF-R1 road bike prepared by Pete Beale Racing with the livery of his Yamaha MotoGP Tech3 squad’s Monster Energy colours.
Before heading to Losail, the 22-year old British rider will also be promoting motorcycle racing in the Middle East advising local riders during special track days at Bahrain International Formula One circuit, the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi and also in Dubai.
“I’m so looking forward to this trip – helping up and coming riders, riding new circuits which I’ve only seen on the television and to be honest enjoying a bit of sunshine,” said Smith. “I’ve been pushing really hard to make this happen. Of course it’s great preparation for me before MotoGP testing gets underway in Sepang but also I’m certain there is some real racing talent in that part of the world. You only have to see how MotoGP has exploded in Malaysia to understand what the success of local riders can achieve. I end the trip with a couple of races in Qatar and it will be interesting to see just how the riders have improved actually racing against them.”
Round 1 of the QIIRC that took place at the Losail circuit on December 22nd was won by Alexander Cudlin with Nina Prinz and Mashel Al Naimi completing the podium and race 2 again saw the same identical podium.
