WSBK Donington OP1 - Fabrizio takes provisional pole

Michel Fabrizio took provisional pole position with a 1′30.775 lap this afternoon in a wet to dry qualifying session at Donington Park, only four tenths of a second from Troy Bayliss’s 2007 record.

Leon Haslam was second, but four tenths from the Xerox Ducati rider. Third was Ben Spies who could not better his earlier free practice times. Former BSB Champion, Gregorio Lavilla was fourth fastest with his Guandalini Ducati while another BSB Champion, Shane Byrne was fifth even if binned his Ducati.

Wild card Leon Camier who is leading in this year’s BSB Championship took sixth. Jakub Smrz, the other Ducati Guandalini rider was seventh and Lorenzo Lanzi on the private Ducati DFX, 8th. Carlos Checa was 9th while points leader Noriyuki Haga rounded out the top ten. Tom Sykes and James Ellison didn’t make it into the top ten, ending the day in 11th and 12th.

Max Biaggi who turned 38 today was 13th, while John Hopkins lost seven positions from the first free practice to take 14th. Winner of Misano race 2, Jonathan Rea was only 15th. Both BMW riders made the cut for tomorrow’s Superpole with Xaus in 17th and Troy Corser 20th. Ryuichi Kiyonari who won last year’s race was 23rd and Blake Young who is making his first European appearance on the Alstare Suzuki was 28th.
