This Sunday saw another fund raising motocross event called Una Gara x Luca (a race for Luca) organized by MotoGP rider Marco Melandri and Scot Racing’s Sporting Director Alberto Martinelli, who got together to help injured Luca Pellegrini, by raising funds to pay for his rehabilitation.
Last August, Pellegrini lost control of his bike after a technical failure, crashed and sustained serious spinal injuries and after an operation was completely paralyzed, but after being transferred to the Montecatone Clinic in Imola, the seventeen year old has now gained some use of his arms and wrists, but still faces long and expensive treatment.
12,000 fans including Luca, showed up for this memorable event at Autodromo Bonara di Castrezzato track and weren’t disappointed because they saw race track riders and motocross riders face off in an exciting two heat race.
The formula was simple: each motocross rider was paired up with a race track rider and who got the most points would win and it was Marco Melandri and Toni Cairoli, who are friends off track and often train together, win the event by just one point against the second place duo, Davide Gozzini and Rodrig Thain.
Loris Capirossi and Roberto Locatelli, Franco Battaini and the 2008 MX1 World Champion David Philippaerts showed up even if they didn’t ride, just to take in the races, as did managers and techs from the GP paddock.
Final Standings:
1 Melandri- Cairoli 11; 2 Gozzini- Thain 13; 3 Pellegrini- Muratori 16; 4 Guarneri- Bussei 22; 5. Simoncelli- Leok27; 6. Chiodi- Beltrami 29; 7 Cervellin – Polita 36; 8 Botturi- Zeni 39; 9 Belometti- Saltarelli 40; 10 Dovizioso – Aperio
