After the lights went out at Jerez, it seemed after the first laps that it would be another runaway race for Dani Pedrosa who looked like he was on his way to take his first win this season with a comfortable margin, but a hardcharging Jorge Lorenzo and his spectacular final lap passes snatched the lead leaving Pedrosa in second and Valentino Rossi in third.

Lorenzo celebrated his home win and the sixth win of his MotoGP career with a jump in the Jerez pond, fully clad in leathers and helmet.

Lorenzo started his charge after falling to fifth at the start, after five laps he took fourth place from a suffering Casey Stoner and he needed just another five laps to catch and overtake Nicky Hayden. With six laps remaining Lorenzo trailed Pedrosa by over two seconds, first overtaking his fellow team mate on lap 22 and then setting his sights on Dani Pedrosa. With just two laps go Lorenzo tried to pass Pedrosa twice, but the diminuitive Spaniard held him off, but on the final lap, he got his pass to stick and cruised to the finish lane.

With the two Spaniard riders fighting it outm Rossi creeped back on the duo and trying to regain second place, but he was only able to get within 0.347s of Pedrosa at the end of the race.

Behind the top three, Nicky Hayden continued his strong start to the 2010 season with another fourth place and beating Casey Stoner for the first time and holding off his team mate.

Casey Stoner took fifth, continuing his trend at Jerez, a track where he’s been on the podium only once since his move to MotoGP.

Sixth was Andrea Dovizioso, and excellent 7th place for Mika Kallio who had several issues with his Ducati this weekend, but managing to keep Gresini Honda’s Marco Melandri behind him, who put up a great battle with his team mate Simoncelli, before the big Marco faded to 11th.

Randy de Puniet ended up ninth, and Alvaro Bautista closed out the top ten for Rizla Suzuki, while his team mate Loris Capirossi crashed out.

A weekend to forget for Monster Tech3 team, Colin Edwards finished in 12th, while Ben Spies pulled out after nine laps suffering from front end problems that mined his confidence.

Hector Barbera and Hiroshi Aoyama finished in 13th and 14th respectively an Aleix Espargaro was the last rider under the flag, after suffering technical problems that saw him pit and then rejoin.

After two rounds, Jorge Lorenzo now leads the championship with 45 points to Rossi’s 41 and Pedrosa is third with 29 points.
