The rain that has been falling all week in Northern Italy, hampered the first part of qualifying session 1 at Monza, but as soon as the track started drying out the lap times started to slowly drop and Yamaha Sterilgarda’s Cal Crutchlow ended up on top of the time sheets again, despite being eight tenths slower from the earlier practice session that was held in dry conditions.
Jonathan Rea, Assen’s double winner took the second spot, just 0.212s behind Crutchlow. Michel Fabrizio on the Ducati Xerox was third and Troy Corser on his BMW machine was fourth and points leader Leon Haslam was fifth, making it five different manufacturers in the top five positions.
Ruben Xaus was one of the fastest riders on the damp track, but then fell back to sixth. Xaus was followed by the superfast on the straight, Max Biaggi and Jakub Smrz on his private Ducati and James Toseland and rounding out the top ten was Luca Scassa with his Supersonic Ducati.
Noriyuki Haga could only finish in a lowly 15th place. Daisaku Sakai of Yoshimura Suzuki was running as high as tenth in the wet and dropped down to 19th after another crash, his second of the day.
