Max Biaggi and his Aprilia Alitalia flew the Italian tricolor flag on the highest podium for the second time at Monza’s temple of speed. The Roman Emperor won a superb race cruising to an easy victory and closing the championship lead to just three points from Leon Haslam in this fifth round.
Leon Haslam took second and BMW’s Troy Corser with his third place grabbed the first ever podium for the BMW Superbike team.
Biaggi got the holeshot again, but disaster struck on the first turn leading into the modified chicane when James Toseland, Jonathan Rea and Ruben Xaus got caught up in a confusing melee, with all three riders going down. The latest reports confirm that Toseland was taken to the hospital for further tests after that he was diagnosed with a concussion, while Rea suffered a slight sprain to his ankle and Xaus seems to got off virtually unscathed.
The race would see a battle for the lead, between Troy Corser, Leon Haslam and Cal Cruthlow, but Biaggi was able to keep them all off with his speed down the straight and his tight riding on the corners
Cal Crutchlow was on Biaggi’s tail for most of the race until his engine blew on lap 13 and spilling enough oil on his rear tire to bring the Sterilgarda Yamaha down which left Biaggi a wide open gap to control the rest of the race.
Leon Camier finished fourth with the second Aprilia and Tom Sykes took fifth after a long fought battle with Noriyuki Haga while Sylvain Guintoli settled for seventh after trying a last corner lunge, but both Sykes and Haga closed the French rider off.
The last three spots in the top ten went to three private Ducati riders, Jakub Smrz, Shane Byrne and Luca Scassa.
Michel Fabrizio closed the Monza weekend with a crash on lap 2 and between crashes and DNF’s only fifteen riders made it across the finish line in race 2.
