Casey Stoner commanded today’s free practice at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, the Ducati rider was the first rider to break the 1.22 mark and seemed untouchable throughout the one hour practice session laying down a best lap of 1′21″699 and leaving points leader Jorge Lorenzo in second and 0.233s off the Aussie’s lap time.

Andrea Dovizioso, who may lose his factory ride next season, took the third best time ahead of his team mate Dani Pedrosa in fourth and 0.860sec from Stoner.

Ben Spies with his new updates on his Monster Yamaha M1 and perfect knowledge of the Laguna Seca circuit grabbed fifth. Spies was 0.020s faster than sixth place Valentino Rossi was almost a second off of Stoner’s best time, spending the session searching for his race pace on hard tires.

Nicky Hayden was seventh closely followed by Colin Edwards who was just 0.069s from the Ducati factory rider. Marco Melandri took ninth ahead of a flurry of riders who are at Laguna Seca for the first time.

Aleix Espargaro and Mika Kallio were tenth and eleventh, respectively. It was the first on track time for both Pramac Ducati riders as Kallio, who missed last year’s race after picking up a hand injury at Assen.

Marco Simoncelli took twelfth after crashing on his third lap and he was followed by Hector Barbera. Alex de Angelis took the 14th fastest time coming to grips on his second outing with the Interwetten Honda bike. Loris Capirossi and Alvaro Bautista were 15th and 16th. Roger Lee Hayden who was called in to replace the injured Randy de Puniet was 17th on his first ride on the LCR Honda.
