Today’s MotoGP qualifying session at the Masaryk Circuit at Brno threw up a several surprises, with Dani Pedrosa grabbing the pole position in the dying seconds of the session with a best lap of 1.56.508 to beat out an amazing Ben Spies who headed the timesheets twice and was pushed back to second and just 0.338s from Pedrosa’s best time.

Despite the dry and sunny conditions, Marco Simoncelli, Hector Barbera, Nicky Hayden (who seems to have injured his left hand) crashed out and both Yamaha factory riders who also crashed out the final decisive minutes of the session.

Jorge Lorenzo binned his M1 at turn 11 with his bike ending up on the tire barrier, but his previous lap time will let him take off in third, while just a minute later Valentino Rossi would also lose front of his M1 in the final chicane and would get up visibily angry about his error that will leave him in fifth on tomorrow’s starting grid.

On the second row in front of Rossi, in fourth will be Casey Stoner who is continuing to struggle with his Desmosedici. The sixth place went to Andrea Dovizioso with Colin Edwards in seventh and fellow American Nicky Hayden in eighth. Hector Barbera despite his crash took the ninth position, while Loris Capirossi closed out the top ten.

Randy de Puniet who has returned to action just 26 days after breaking his leg qualified eleventh. Marco Simoncelli took twelfth followed by Mika Kallio, Marco Melandri, Alex de Angelis and Aleix Espargaro.

Alvaro Bautista missed the qualifying session after hurting his back in the morning’s practice but will undergo another medicak examination tomorrow morning before making a decision to race.
