Valentino Rossi vs Jorge Lorenzo: what's in a wink

MotoGP 2010 Sepang

That Jorge Lorenzo is the 2010 MotoGP champion is all well and good but you’ve got to wonder if he isn’t asking himself what he needs to do to have the glory he deserves. In an incredible race from Valentino Rossi at the MotoGP Sepang round, he carved up the grid starting from back in second row and entering the first turn in 11th position only to finish in the number one spot on the podium. In fact, and especially if you’re a Rossi fan, you’ll probably agree that he stole Lorenzo’s thunder in the most convincing and dramatic of ways.

This time not because Rossi and Lorenzo had the tussle they had at last week’s MotoGP Motegi, but because Rossi showed what pure, superior riding skills he has. Watching closely at the presentation on the podium, I could have sworn Rossi even winked at Lorenzo at one point. We’re certain it was a wink to say ‘well done champion’ but it’s also a very telling gesture from the top spot on the podium down to third. Just a reminder that Rossi is still around….

You have to hand it to Jorge, he’s the real deal. He took wins from Rossi in his first year of premier class racing. Pre shoulder injury Jorge has walked away from Rossi and put real pressure on the supposed GOAT. We are lucky to have 4 such top class riders and Jorge has shown consistently that he’s as quick or quicker than the lots on his day. He’s unsettled a moto gp giant and taken his first world crown aged just 23. He’s possibly less charismatic than Rossi but he’s no less of a rider. Would Rossi have enjoyed the same sucesses had he been sharing a team with the Mick Doohan’s/Wayne Rainey’s of this world? Lorenzo’s had lightning fast riders in abundance to contend with and beat them all in his rollercoaster maiden year. Don’t get me wrong Valentino is a brilliant rider but so’s Jorge. Time for a little more appreciation of this spanish wonder kid.
