Better weather conditions, but more cold and a couple of damp spots on the Phillip Island race circuit was what the the MotoGP riders found in this morning’s second free practice, with birthday boy Casey Stoner taking the top spot and dominating the timesheets.

The Ducati rider hit his mark with a best lap of 1′31.243, and was the only rider to break the 1.32 barrier, and he was a 0.757s ahead of a surprising Yamaha Tech3 duo Colin Edwards and Ben Spies, who were second and third respectively, with Spies making up time after deciding to sit out most of Friday’s first practice.

Jorge Lorenzo took his factory Yamaha M1 to fourth, while team mate Valentino Rossi struggled to a lowly eighth place and was a massive 1.424s off Stoner’s pace, the Italian suffering from shoulder weakness after winning last weekend’s race at Sepang.

Nicky Hayden was fifth, closely followed by Andrea Dovizioso, while HRC team mate Dani Pedrosa despite suffering badly with shoulder pain was 17th and 3.5s off the pace, managed to put together 19 laps in the session.

Randy de Puniet was seventh in the session despite a crash at turn four. Gresini’s Marco Simoncelli and Marco Melandri closed out the top ten, with Melandri crashing early in the session on some standing water.
