This afternoon’s free practice 2 at Le Mans once again saw a Honda 1-2-3, with a devasting Casey Stoner leading the field with a blistering 1.33.782 and the only rider to break the 1.34 mark, shaving off another three tenths from this morning’s already race lap record.
Following Stoner on the Gresini Honda, was Marco Simoncelli and team mate Dani Pedrosa who were able to run several laps only in the high 1.34s, and were 0.404s and 0.696 adrift from the pace setter who seems to be virtually unstoppable on the French track.
The surprise of the session was Ducati’s Nicky Hayden in fourth, grabbed in the final laps as the 45 minute session was ending, which let him pip Jorge Lorenzo for the position by just 0.077s.
Taking the sixth spot was Andrea Dovizioso and the final rider within a second from Casey Stoner. From seventh to tenth four riders were separated by a little more than 0.030s which saw Colin Edwards, Hiroshi Aoyama, Valentino Rossi and Ben Spies, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th respectively.
