Jorge Lorenzo has won (his second of the year) at the Gran Premio d’Italia Tim, in one of the most exciting races of the season, by hunting down a seemingly dominating Casey Stoner, instead the Yamaha rider turned the race upside down and at the Casanova-Savelli with six laps to go and flew past Stoner to take the victory with 0.997s gap, leaving Andrea Dovizioso and Casey Stoner the other podiums spot.

Poleman Stoner got the holeshot and proceeded to run away and looking unstoppable, leaving the rest of the field 1″3 seconds adrift by end of the second lap and adding a tenth of second lap over lap building over a two second lead, while Lorenzo and Dovizioso duelled for several exciting laps before deciding to go after Stoner and reel in the Australian who started to have grip and tire pressure issues. Dovizioso sat on Stoner’s tail at the start of the last lap and barged past and then held his lines to the finish line in second.

Fourth went to Assen winner Ben Spies who battled with Marco Simoncelli for the position and overtook the Italian on the final lap. The Gresini Honda rider who had the race pace of the front runners suffered from grip problems due to the high track temperatures especially in the final laps.

Valentino Rossi took a lonely sixth spot after starting from twelfth, once again the fastest Ducati rider not withstanding his results during practice and qualifying, but he was still a massive 26 seconds from the winner of the race. The Italian battled with a gaggle of riders especially a rampant Hector Barbera before shaking off the Spaniard, who finished in seventh and over two seconds behind the factory Ducati rider.

Dani Pedrosa took a cautious eighth, returning to action after missing the last three races due to a broken collarbone in the highly controversial Le Mans incident, while Yamaha Tech 3’s Coin Edwards finished ahead of Nicky Hayden in ninth. Hayden who was sixth before running off track at the San Donato returned to the field in 16th to charge through the back field to claim his 10th spot.
