Casey Stoner completely dominated today’s qualifying session at Indianapolis. The Repsol Honda rider blitzed the field with several flying laps, but it was an extraordinary 1.38.85o lap (0.688s faster than his morning record lap) in the final minutes that let him take his 7th pole position of this season and the 29th of his career.
Ben Spies will take off on the front row in second and he was a big 0.523s adrift from the Australian, while Yamaha team mate Jorge Lorenzo who has struggled all weekend long grabbed the third spot on the grid bumping Dani Pedrosa into fourth. Pedrosa was a little more second slower than his Repsol Honda team mate.
Andrea Dovizioso on the third Repsol Honda took fifth, while Colin Edwards was sixth and just a little more than a tenth slower that the two Honda factory riders.
Marco Simoncelli who is suffering from front end grip took seventh. Nicky Hayden on his last flying lap grabbed eighth as team mate Valentino Rossi’s nightmare season on the Ducati continued. The Italian was only able to qualify a lowly 14th and massive 2.125s off pace. An early lowside at turn 2 wrecked the handlebars of his GP11.1 and dented his confidence leaving him struggling in the back of the grid with his second bike and his second worse qualifying session after Sachsenring (16th).
Alvaro Bautista and Hector Barbera rounded out the top ten.
