MotoGP lap times were slightly slower this afternoon’s FP2 at Phillip Island as the wind changed direction, however Casey Stoner was still the fastest rider as he lead the top of the timesheets with a best lap of 1.30.535, and an irresistible race pace that was virtually untouchable.
Marco Simoncelli improved from this morning’s third place to take second and little more than three tenths of a second adrift, but his session was marred as he binned his RC212V once again at turn 10. Jorge Lorenzo was unable to match his morning lap time as he finished in third and 0.576s off pace, while Yamaha team mate Ben Spies made a big jump forward to take fourth and get within a second from the Repsol Honda rider.
Dani Pedrosa was fifth and seems to be suffering from grip problems on the bumpy Australian track, while Hiroshi Aoyama took sixth. Evidently Fausto Gresini’s comment that the Japanese rider may be ‘missing the required determination’ has fired up the former 250cc World Champion.
Pramac’s Randy de Puniet was seventh and the best Ducati rider on track, while the factory Ducati’s with Nicky Hayden and Valentino Rossi were only 11th and 13th respectively. Alvaro Bautista dragged himself lap after lap from back of the field to take eighth. Colin Edwards dropped from this morning’s fourth to ninth, while Andrea Dovizioso closed out the top ten and again ended up behind the Yamaha Tech3 rider.
