In order to stop a wave of drug related slayings, politicians in Honduras have voted to ban motorcycle riders from carrying passengers for the next six months, as motorcycles have been used in several high-profile murders.
The new law was passed by Congress last Wednesday in response to the killings of former Honduran Security Minister Alfredo Landaverde and radio journalist Luz Marina Paz Villalobos.
“Given the current security situation, we believe that the appropriate response is that only one person at a time will be allowed on motorcycles,” said Security Minister Pompeyo Bonilla.
Honduras suffers from the world’s highest murder rate: 82 per 100,000 people a year.
