Here is our one picture of Casey Stoner from yesterday’s MotoGP Silverstone tests. After the testing and technical team meeting, Stoner made a fast get-away on his scooter, which you can see in this blurry photograph. There would be more than one young scooter goer wanting a Ducati 27 number scooter to whizz about on. More pics coming from today.

Here are a few live pics we took at the MotoGP Silverstone testing today. Among the pics are scatterings of umbrella girls (but frankly it was very cold and we’ll have more of them later), the MotoGP team trucks and a few scenes from down among the pit-boxes where the very noisy exhaust contrasts with the relative calm of the staff in the boxes themselves.

Who knows what might be going through the mind of Jorge Lorenzo this evening? He has qualified in pole position for tomorrow’s final race at the 2010 Silverstone MotoGP; a race whose result could significantly contribute to Lorenzo’s championship hopes. We are only at the fifth round of the 2010 MotoGP but already it’s been an eventful season, not least with Valentino Rossi out for most of the year with a serious injury.

As we said, that leaves the Yamaha MotoGP box half empty, a team without its favourite rider, and a nation without its number one sportstar. That said, the debate around the paddock at Silverstone is over the pros and cons for Lorenzo in being the sole flag bearer for Fiat Yamaha. You might think there are no negative points in it for Lorenzo - perhaps the biggest challenge to the grand prix championship, not to mention the media’s favourite rivalry focus, has been sidelined due to injury, leaving him with a clear path to victory. Very neat.

But, as a colleague of mine who interviewed Lorenzo yesterday said, it’s not always as it seems. The Spanish rider is not everyone’s favourite GP guy, especially for the Italians who have often accused him of trying to ride the coat tails of the success of Valentino’s personality. In fact, Lorenzo does seem a mixed kettle of fish. He is certainly reserved and cryptic, which are traits that aren’t always appreciated by a sports loving public.

The Fiat Yamaha box at the Silverstone MotoGP is half empty, missing its star rider and champion, Valentino Rossi. In fact there’s an air of despondency over the whole Yamaha team, not to mention the nation of Italy itself; it’s rare to find one sports star who commands the affection of an entire nation, but Valentino Rossi is one such star.

So he’s sending a message to his fans and supporters via this new Silverstone Rossi fan t-shirt: “torno subito” or literally “I’ll be back straight away”. While Rossi sends messages to his adorers, Lorenzo continues his campaign towards the championship. The pressure may or may not get to him but he’s currently well placed, and Rossi, as if he had to, is reminding his fans he’s still number one.
