Australian GP boss assures fans that Phillip Island will stay on the calendar

By Toni M.

phillip island gp circuit

Phillip Island is probably one of the best loved racing venues for both fans and riders, but after this year’s GP with it’s very flukey weather conditions and the usual rider complaints, Dorna’s CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta set out immediately to try to have the traditional October date pushed up earlier in the season.

Ezpeleta according to MCN, has even warned the track organizers that if GP racing doesn’t get a March date for 2012 season, it won’t be granted FIM homologation. However Andrew Westacott of the Australian MotoGP at Phillip Island, has confirmed that there is no risk that the venue will be removed from the calendar, citing that their contract states that the races are to be held in September or October until 2016.

“Dorna has asked us to review the matter and those discussions are ongoing,”
said Westacott. “But the timeslot and the preferred option for us it to have it in September/October. As most motorsport fans will know, the vagaries of the weather mean that there’s no guarantees of a good day or bad at Phillip Island.”

True that no one can guarantee the weather at Phillip Island, or anywhere else as a matter of fact, but the World Superbike championship that holds their event at the Island at end of February, has to the best of my very untrusty memory, never really faced the topsy turvy weather conditions that MotoGP does in October.

2010 Arai range: RX-7 GP Edwards and Haga Phillip Island replicas

By Alison

Arai RX-7 GP Edwards and RX-7 GP Haga Phillip Island

The new year kicks off with a nice Arai 2010 range, including these RX-7 GP Edwards and RX-7 GP Haga Phillip Island models. The RX-7 GP is both an ECE 22-05 and a Snell M2010 approved helmet with top-of-the-range technology. It’s the first Arai helmet to have an external shell made with Peripherally Belted SNC (PB SNC) tech which means that the top layer of the shell has another protective coating for further strength.

The RX-7 GP also has Air Wing adjustable function in five different positions, which stabilises the helmet, reducing turbulance that can result from track use. It has greater air intakes but reduced noise, and the visor is wider by 5 mm on both sides for better peripheral vision. The cheek padding can be removed.

The RX-7 GP Edwards replica has new red and black twin tone colour in a vortex-style graphic. It’s available in sizes from XS to XXL and costs about 910 euros. The Noriyuki Haga replica helmet is ready to celebrate Haga’s first Superbike win at Phillip Island. It is based on the previous version, but the new replica has an inversed chrome look with black flames on red background. It’s available in sizing from XS to XXL and also costs about 910 euros. For more information on Arai products, see the official Arai site.

By Alison

California superbike school

The California Superbike School still has some dates free in its 2009 calendar in the UK and across Europe for its one and two day courses. While early July in the UK is all booked up, there are still places available at Silverstone South on July 21, and for courses in the Czech Republic, as for info.

If you want to try something special, a two day camp is taking place at Jerez in Spain from September 21, and places are still available. For more details on the California Superbike school schedule in Europe, see the program.

The school also conducts forums and ride days at Phillip Island and Eastern Creek in Australia. For more information on the Australian calendar, see the Aussie website. If you want to learn how to corner like a pro, this is the place to go.

WSBK girls from Phillip Island

By Alison

Here’s a nice video of the Australian girls at the Phillip Island WSBK, in the first stop for Superbike 2009.

While the guys over on motoblog reckon that Made in Italy brolly girls are better, I think the Aussies are at the top for cheeky smiles and long legs. Not that I’m biased…

Troy Bayliss at Phillip Island

By Toni M.

Troy Bayliis

Troy Bayliss, the reigning World Superbike Champion who retired after last year after his third championship win, couldn’t stay away from WSB for long, as he returned to the Phillip Island paddock as a spectator this weekend, and was interviewed by the media.

“It’s great to be here at the Island but at the same time very strange to not be riding with all the guys. I guess it is going to hit more a bit later this weekend. I was here for the first practice session and it was OK, I sort of enjoyed watching it and didn’t have any inclination to join in. But it is a strange situation, although I am quite happy with it at the moment.”

I watched today’s sessions and as we knew Sunday will be a real battle between several fast guys. I am here with some friends who come every year and who made the aussie flag for me when I won here last year. I am really looking forward to seeing the racing and I’ll be giving the trophy to the race 2 winner which will be interesting, I would like to see Nori and Michel up there for sure!

By Alison

BMW S 1000 RR 2009 stradale

Finally arrived is the road version of the S 1000 RR, BMW’s superbike effort that will be presented at the World Superbike Championships at Phillip Island in March. After recent tests in Portimao and Valencia, riders Troy Corser and Ruben Xaus are positive about the future for the BMW Motorrad Motorsport Team.

The racing bike version will be similar to the series bike, in line with the sports spirit. Production of the road version has already commenced with a completely new package, compact and light, and a four cylinder, in line 999cc engine. The dry weight comes in at 183 kg, and combined with the performance, this makes for an attractive new package from BMW.

The whole bike, from valves to twin cam, has been designed to be light and compact with dimensions at the level of a Formula 1. This should enable the complete torque and performance of the bike to be fully exploited.

MotoGP: First test day for Kawasaki

By koen

It was a successful first day of testing for the Kawasaki MotoGp team in Phillip Island as the three-day testing programme started with perfect conditions. The Kawasaki riders and test rider Olivier Jacque will ride more than 1000 Km on this day only.

Marco Melandri will work with the suspension engineers to improve the front and Jacque will concentrate on the revised chassis and the new electronic package. For Hopkins was it a painful day. His fractured ankle from his crash at Assen from June is fixed with a plate but still giving problems. He worked with his new chief Naoya Kaneko to improve laptimes.

Olivier Jacque, test rider and development rider said: “Today we’ve focused on evaluating a new chassis on the Ninja ZX-RR, with positive results. We’re also working with a revised electronics package on the bike, which gives us more options for fine-tuning the power delivery characteristics, and again the initial results have been positive.”

All the data from these three days will be collected and will be used for the Kawasaki development programme for 2009, when the Ninja ZX-RR will perform for the first time at Sepang in February.

MotoGP Phillip Island: Rossi second after Stoner

By koen

Yamaha rider Valentino Rossi recoverd from his crash from yesterday and started the Phillip Island MotoGP race in the fourth row and finished second after Ducati rider Casey Stoner. Valentino’s team-mate Jorge Lorenzo took a fourth place after a strong battle with several riders.

World Champion Valentino Rossi said about his crash: “Unfortunately I made a small mistake yesterday and I paid a high price for it- both with my starting position and with my body! This morning my neck was okay but I had a lot of pain in my head, so I have to say thank you to Dr. Costa and the Clinica Mobile because they gave me a lot of massages and some medicine and I was in better shape for the race.”

About the race, Rossi gives his point of view: “I got a good start and I was lucky to miss de Angelis by just a couple of centimetres, and then I arrived at Lorenzo and Toseland. The first time I passed James I thought I would be able to go but he passed me back and I realised that his pace was not so bad, and we had a great battle! He was very strong and difficult to pass but once I did get by I was able to go and then I just kept pushing and gradually Nicky got bigger and bigger. It was fun to keep figthing till the last lap and I am very happy with this second position because it’s always a great emotion to be on the podium here. Thanks to my team and to Bridgestone, with Casey as strong as he was I think this was the best we could have done today and I really enjoyed the race.”

MotoGP Phillip Island: Ducati and Stoner win

By koen

Casey Stoner won with his Ducati Desmosedici Phillip Island round before Yamaha rider and new World Champion Valentino Rossi.

Casey on his victory: “This weekend has been a bit like the whole season -up and down! Thankfully it’s finished on a high and it’s a great feeling to win my home Grand Prix in front of all these wonderful fans, with my family here too. It’s been a great year for me and even though we haven’t won the title I feel proud of our achievements. If we can battle for the championship again next year that would be great but for now I’m just going to enjoy winning my home GP.”

Livio Suppo, Ducati MotoGP Project Director said about Casey and the victories: “Casey was fantastic and he truly deserved to win here at Phillip Island. Today’s victory is really very special and comes after a few difficult races for him. I am very happy that he has been successful here of all places, in front of his fans. And it is also the best way for us to celebrate our one hundredth race in MotoGP.”

The statistics: It’s the 5th victory of the season for Casey, the 2nd in a row at Phillip Island and the 15th in his name. For Ducati 100th MotoGP race since the start in the Championship in 2003. Ducati claimed 58 podiums with 23 of the victories and 22 pole positions. In 2007 Ducati claimed the Riders and the Constructors Title.

MotoGP Phillip Island: end of season Valentino and Casey battle

By koen

A new round in the MotoGP Championship comes again this weekend, but it won’t be with the same feeling for the top two riders Valentino and Casey. Though this doesn’t mean they won’t fight for the next podium place; maybe we can all enjoy a thrilling race with great fights. The pressure has subsided for the title, but they will keep on riding and using every second to get the podium! How are they feeling and how are they preparing themselves for the Phillip Island round?

Valentino Rossi, first in the championship and new World Champion:
“I want to win for my guys! It’s been a couple of days and I am starting to get used to being World Champion again; it is a truly wonderful feeling! On Sunday we had a great party with my team and my friends who had come out to the race, and then on Monday we were meant to test some things for the 2009 bike but the rain came and we had to cancel it. Actually I was quite disappointed because I was looking forward to seeing what we had, but now we will wait for Valencia. Anyway, now we have three more races, at tracks which I love, I’m so excited to be able to just have fun at all of them. As everyone knows Phillip Island is one of my favourite tracks, maybe the best of all, and it’s an incredible feeling to race there.”

Casey Stoner, 2nd in the championship:
“The three races before Japan were really difficult for us, with two crashes and a fourth place, so even though I couldn’t win at Motegi second place, it wasn’t a bad result and it means I can look ahead to Phillip Island in a positive manner. I can’t wait to race there- not only because it’s my home race but also because it is one of the best tracks in the world, with so many fast corners and fun sections to ride a MotoGP bike. I love it and think the other riders would agree with me on that. Hopefully the weather holds out but even if it rains Phillip Island is always great fun.”
