PROCESS MAKES PERFECT: ADVENTURE TOURING
Italian motorcycle gear manufacturer Alpinestars has produced this interesting video called ‘Process Makes Perfect’ that coincides with the release of their Fall 2010 Touring products as well as the new Tech Touring website.
From concept, design and development stages, the video gives us a look into their Technical Apparel R&D facility in Asolo (TV) and as part of the press release reads “the dedication, passion and technical expertise that goes into creating the Tech Touring range. From hand-drawn sketches to laboratory and field testing, Process Makes Perfect documents the process of striving towards the perfect touring product.”
The other day Alpinestars, the Italian-based company unveiled their new innovation for motorcycle riding protection, the Electronic Airbag Technology.
MotoGP riders Ben Spies, Mika Kallio and Dani Pedrosa are currently using the AStars airbag system and you can check out from the video how they deploy on Pramac Ducati rider Mika Kallio.
The incorporated airbags are located in the shoulder, collarbone region and the system is said to add about 500 grams of weight compared Dainese’s D-Air weight of 700-750 grams.
Alpinestars has unveiled its new Tech Air Race motorcycle suit, which features airbag protection. Airbags in motorcycle suits are becoming the cutting edge of rider safety protection and Alpinestars system is very compact and has a sophisticated deployment technology controlled by a high-tech electronic brain.
A very complicated set of algorithms constantly monitor the rider’s movements, and there are five levels of programing that ensures the airbag doesn’t deploy when it’s not necessary.
Data logging to control the system began back in 2003 with John Hopkins and now Casey Stoner, Ben Spies, Mika Kallio and Dani Pedrosa are all running the data logging suits at MotoGP races.
The Air Tech has seven sensors placed on the suit and two separate cylinders that set off a cold charge of nitrogen. It takes just 50 milliseconds to fully inflate and stays fully inflated for around five seconds. After 25 seconds the bag completely deflates. The suit is also equipped with a GPS system which signals emergency personal coordinates as to where the accident has take place.
Production is targeted for June of 2011, and Alpinestars estimates that the Tech Air will add around $2500 to the price of a standard riding suit.

Some good things are on the way with the Alpinestars 2010 spring range, starting with the “Calgary” jacket. It’s made from waxed cotton and has more pockets than you’ll ever need, both inside and out, and has an adjustable waist. Incorporated are elbow and shoulder protectors. The Calgary jacket comes in black in sizes from S-XXXXL.
Also new for 2010 is the Bullit men’s leather jacket, making simplicity very sexy. It’s available in white, black or brown and while it looks minimalist, you can still house back and chest protectors if required. It has in-built shoulder and elbow padding, and both exterior and interior pockets.
Other additions to the Alpinestars range include the Tech 8 boot, the Tech 1-R race suit, Stella Georgia ladies jacket, Velocity men’s leather jacket and Afrika Gore-Tex boots. That won’t be all for the new season, but it’s enough to make the coming of the warmer season even more tempting. See Alpinestars.com for details on the lifestyle clothing range, too.
