Eugene Laverty signs a two year deal with Aprilia

By Toni M.

eugene laverty

Just ahead of World Superbike race 1 at Portimao, Aprilia has officially confirmed that Eugene Laverty will be indeed riding a RSV4 and for the next two seasons.

At the present there is no mention whether the Irishman who is currently third in the standings, will be Max Biaggi’s new team mate or if he’ll be in a satellite team with a full spec factory Aprilia. Laverty will get a first tast of the Italian superbike on Tuesday during the first official post-season test at Portimao, when he’ll be using Noriyuki Haga’s Pata branded bike

Aprilia rumors from Monza WSBK round

By Toni M.

max biaggi

Our French cousin Vincent from Motosblog.fr has picked up some interesting stuff at Monza (and no it wasn’t one of the brolly girls) regarding Aprilia’s Superbike plans in 2012, but since they’re all paddock rumors take it with a grain a salt and the usual doubting Thomas attitude.

Apparently the Piaggio Group who also owns Aprilia, seems interested in taking over Ducati’s dominant position as a manufacturer to WSBK satellite teams and has their eye on the well funded Czech team, Liberty Racing that is fielding Jakub Smrz and Sylvain Guintoli this season. Smrz has already ridden an Aprilia RSV4 in 2010, when his Pata B&G Racing Team decided to switch machinery from Ducati to Aprilia at the Brno round.

The other team is Alstare Suzuki, run by the very fiesty Francis Batta whose complaints about not having almost any support from Suzuki is more than well documented. The Belgium manager may be just be at the end of his tether on still running GSX-R’s next season and may be contemplating a more factory supportive Aprilia.

Gigi Dall'Igna denies any Aprilia wrongdoings

By Toni M.

max biaggi

When yesterday’s rumor broke that Aprilia had run a slightly different fuel injection pump on Max Biaggi’s RSV4 at Assen, and that the Italian manufacturer had been warned to replace it with the original homologated one mounted on their street bikes before the Monza round next month, certain fans started to get their panties in a twist, as if someone would actually dare accuse Aprilia and a World Champion of bending the rules.

So the biggest Italian website on racing news GPone.com decided to contact Aprilia’s team manager Gigi Dall’Igna to find out the truth behind the rumor and get the real lowdown from the man himself.

The manager naturally denied the rumors or any wrongdoings, pointing out that the fuel injection pump on Biaggi’s RSV4 was/is in conformity with the rules and the only difference from the one on Camier’s and Haga’s bikes was a date stamp placed on it during the production phase and that’s different for all the pumps.

End of this little rumor, but we’re sure that something equally jucier will come up by the end of the season, it always does.

By Toni M.

biaggi aprilia

Max Biaggi has finally signed with Aprilia for next two season and yes, this time it’s official, there’s even an Aprilia press release after the jump to prove it.

Hot rumor! Max Biaggi is thinking of retiring!

By Toni M.

max biaggi

Max Biaggi won the 2010 World Superbike championship title, but the Italian has still to renew his contract with Aprilia. Since we’re pretty cynical we thought he was holding out until he won the title then ask for more euros, but the fact is that the Roman Emperor is thinking of hanging up his leathers and helmet and retire at the end of this season, according to rumors that rocked the WSBK paddock at Magny-Cours yesterday.

In an interview with the Gazzetta dello Sport, Biaggi told the Italian sports daily stated “Let me run this race, then I’ll think about. My goal was to make Aprilia win and become the world champion which I did. Now I have to decide what to do. It’s not a question of money, I’m considering other issues; if the next two years I’ll still be physcially and mentally fit and I’m also evaluating also personal aspects, too.”

Speaking to La7 during this morning’s practice session Gigi Dall’Igna did not deny the rumor, but said: The contract is ready, it’s natural that after such a victory he should be still thinking. We’ll be talking soon when the emotion of the moment dies down. “

Tomorrow on Italian network La7 will air an exclusive interview with Max Biaggi where he’ll talk publicly about his future in Superbike with Aprilia. So check back with us tomorrow after the races for more news.

Max Biaggi WSBK Champion Video Tributes

By Toni M.

max biaggi

Like we said before, Max Biaggi winning the World Superbike Championship is Italy’s motorcycle community’s utmost wet dream and it didn’t take long for his fans to upload on YouTube several video tributes in honour of Roman Emperor.

Here’s what the “Corsaro” had to say after winning his first WSBK title with Aprilia’s RSV4:

“This is a grand day – a day which I have greatly desired.I’ve often felt in past years like I hadn’t been placed in the proper conditions to be able to express my worth and to achieve the results that I know I deserve. This is one of the reasons that, at a certain point in my career, I chose this world, the SBK championship, and this is why I wanted to surround myself with the right people for this adventure – because racing isn’t just about speed, tyres and an engine. It is also about joy and having fun and with these guys, with this team, I feel at home. I want to thank everyone: my team, Aprilia, Piaggio Group, the chairman.”

“It has not been an easy season. Many riders have won races and if they had been just a bit more consistent, they would have been able to be more troublesome for us. The greatest moments were the double victories at Monza and Misano. It is something very special to win in front of my fans. But it isn’t over yet – there is still one goal left – to ride my RSV4 to the manufacturer title. We’ll talk again in a week and it would be truly fantastic to close out this wonderful season with another championship.”

Videos after the jump.

More rumors of Aprilia in MotoGP with Aspar Martinez in 2012

By Toni M.

aspar martinez

The rumors that Aprilia may have decided to enter MotoGP in 2012 with the new 1000cc rules and with Jorge ‘Aspar’ Martinez running the new team are getting stronger as the season goes by.

According to the Gazzetta dello Sport, Aprilia wants to enter MotoGP first with Martinez, who’s contract with Ducati is up at the end of 2011 and then officially enter the premier class with their own full fledged factory team in 2013.

The Italian sports daily is also reporting that deal between Aprilia’s technical director Gigi dall’Igna and the powerful Spanish manager who runs three teams in Grand Prix series, went through a couple of weeks ago and was overseen by Dorna’s Carmelo Ezpeleta.

The Piaggio Group is the fourth largest motorcycle manufacturer after Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki, and Aprilia with Max Biaggi are on their way to their first WSBK championship just two years after the RSV4 Factory debut and the company can’t afford waiting any longer to appear in MotoGP in some form or other.

Max Biaggi renews with Aprilia for two years - UPDATED

By Toni M.

max biaggi

Max Biaggi will be racing till he’s forty-one years old. The Italian, who is very close to winning his first World Superbike title, last night renewed his contract with the Noale based factory for the 2011 and 2012 seasons and will be receiving 1 million euros for each season, plus bonuses.

While it was thought that Biaggi’s renewal would be a foregone conclusion for Aprilia, according to omnimoto.com negotiations got stuck at the beginning of summer, with Piaggio’s Leo Mercanti wanting to lower Biaggi’s paycheck compared to the 2009/2010 season and renewing for only one year at a time, but the Roman Emperor won out and Italy’s wet dream can continue for another two years, with an Italian rider on an Italian motorcycle and Italian sponsor.

UPDATE:

With several rumors denying that Max Biaggi had officially renewed with Aprilia, our Italian cousins at Motoblog.it have called Aprilia and have found out that the Italian has yet to renew his contract and that negotiations are still ongoing.

The Aprilia RSV4 is useless for deliveries, but it sure knows how to win

By Toni M.

This is the second video of three, that Aprilia USA in collaboration with Wes Siler from Hell for Leather and J.F. Musial from TangentVector produced to show off the racing beauty of the Aprilia RSV4 and how Max Biaggi on the Italian machine in the second year since it’s world debut is already dominating the World Superbike scene.

Aprilia’s previous video was the one that poked fun at BMW’s S1000RR table cloth trick.

Only Ducati Hypermotards Used in Knight and Day Movie

By Toni M.

ducati/aprilia tom cruise

When eagle eyed Wes Siler from Hell for Leather caught out that the Ducati Hypermotard that Tom Cruise was riding in Knight and Day was actually an Aprilia, everyone picked up on this juicy little faux pas.

Obviously this didn’t go down well with the Italian manufacturer, because they are now reporting that all the bikes used in the movie are in fact Hypermotards and that that the ‘Faux-cati’ as Autoblog.com calls it, was created for as ESPN promotion.

Now Ducati only has to explain why the Knight and Day crew decided they actually needed an Aprilia dressed up as Hypermotard to do a promo.

Aprilia Tuono V4 2011 Spotted and Filmed

By Toni M.

The journos from motociclismo.it got a closer look at the 2011 Aprilia Tuono V4 lapping at the Mugello and followed it around the track on their MV Agusta F4 and took this exclusive video and several photos.

We’ll probably be seeing the new Tuono debut at the EICMA show this year and this maxi naked version of the RSV4 will have less power, but will be more torquey and at least 4/5 kgs lighter, bringing the weight down to around 179kg.

From the previous spy shots it looks like Aprilia has added a bikini fairing, a smaller and more compact exhaust, ABS a traction control system and according to motociclismo.it the Tuono will probably be closer to the RSV4 R than the expensive factory model.
