Imola’s home boy Ayrton Badovini (he lives less than 10km from the Italian town) topped this morning’s timesheets in the first free practice session for the second round of the World Superbike season, belying the fact that he still suffering from an arm inflammation.
In a very tight session with 12 riders within a second, the BMW Italia rider rushed to the head of the charts in the closing minutes posting a best lap of 1’49.081 which knocked back Effenbert Liberty’s Sylvain Guintoli to the second spot followed by Althea Ducati’s Carlos Checa and Kawasaki’s Tom Sykes.

The BMW Motorrad Italia Superbike Team concluded its first private test at the Portimao circuit, debuting a S 1000RR with a hybrid configuration, including some 2012 parts. Ayrton Badovini was immediately fast setting a best lap of 1’42.5 (on Friday with qualifying tires), while Michel Fabrizio spent even more time learning the bike than chasing fast laps (1.43.3 on qualifyiers) following his first post race test always at the Portuguese circuit.
The privateer team had a precise testing schedule: Monday was devoted to testing new components, especially in terms of reliability, and while not making changes to the bike verifying that everything worked. On day two the team worked on various set-ups and balance. Extremes were also tested to gain an understanding of response from the bike to the changes. Finally, on the third day, efforts were focused on new electronics management software which was ready just in time for the test.
“It was love at first sight! With the new bike, I immediately felt at ease. It’s easy to ride and I like it a lot” declared Badovini. “In these initial tests we have worked hard on the balance and we tried some new chassis set-ups and electronics options. The result was good because we have always been in touch with the front runners and this bodes well for next season in which we want to reap the fruits of the work done so far. The team worked very well, both back at the factory and here, and the results can be seen. ”

Our colleagues over at Motoblog.it are currently on hand for the official presentation to the press of World Superbike Championship’s new entry, BMW Motorrad Italia.
Unfortunately for the guys covering the press conference, it’s not taking place at fancy hotel or big named restaurant, with no half naked chicks or a leather clad Paris Hilton around, and no champagne or ice sculptures, but at the very serious and legendary Autodromo Nazionale di Monza.
The newbie Italian Superbike team will be fielding James Toseland and 2010 Superstock champion Ayrton Badovini, while the winning Superstock team will have Lorenzo Zanetti (7th last year in the STK standings on Ducati 1098R) and Sylvain Barrier (6th with Team Garnier Junior Racing on the S1000RR).
Check back with us later today or tomorrow for more pics and interviews.

After the news on Twowheelsblog about WSB 2009 riders and team line up, we can bring you the first changes. The Kawasaki PSG1 Team from San Marino have renewed their website, showing Ayrton Badovini as a rider for the Kawasaki ZX-10R bike with new blue and white livery. It seems that PSG1 team, created in 2003 by Pierguido Pagani will race with Kawasaki again but not as factory team. It was previously believed that the team would ride Ducati in 2009. The teammate for Ayrton Badovini hasn’t been decided yet. Ayrton rode in World Superbike 2008 for Team Pedercini with Kawasaki and finished 24th.
