The upcoming WSBK round at Donington Park and the following one at Assen will be one rider short, because BMW Italia’s rider James Toseland broke his right wrist during private testing at the Motorland Aragon circuit
The English rider crashed on the second day of testing, picking up a small fracture according to X-rays taken in Spain, but the damage was much worse than expected, and Toseland had to undergo emergency surgery in Manchester and have wires inserted and it will be at least six weeks before they can be removed.
“My main priority was being fit enough to race at Donington,” said Toseland “so I was really pleased when I was told in Spain that I would be ok. But when I got back to the hotel, the pain in my right wrist was unbelievable and, considering that I had a race coming up in a week’s time, I sent the scan on to a specialist I know in Manchester.

As we promised here are more pics, this time official, from yesterday’s BMW Motorrad Italia team launch that took place at the Monza race track.
The team will have factory technical support as confirmed by Bernhard Godmayer, Head of BMW Motorrad Motorsport, “Now we can count on two teams, and we want to establish an excellent relationship between them, allowing for a constant exchange of data.”
While former World Superbike Champion James Toseland, who will much need to revive his career after last year’s debacle on the Sterilgarda Yamaha, said about the previous test, “The first outing was useful only as a shakedown, and to understand which setup direction to move in.”
Ayrton Badovini who gave BMW Italia the 2010 Superstock title and is switching back to Superbikes this year after a stint in 2008 said, “I know how important this opportunity is, and I don’t want to waste it. I have raced in this category before, and I know how much it counts to have a good bike and a good team. From this point of view I’m very confident.”

Our colleagues over at Motoblog.it are currently on hand for the official presentation to the press of World Superbike Championship’s new entry, BMW Motorrad Italia.
Unfortunately for the guys covering the press conference, it’s not taking place at fancy hotel or big named restaurant, with no half naked chicks or a leather clad Paris Hilton around, and no champagne or ice sculptures, but at the very serious and legendary Autodromo Nazionale di Monza.
The newbie Italian Superbike team will be fielding James Toseland and 2010 Superstock champion Ayrton Badovini, while the winning Superstock team will have Lorenzo Zanetti (7th last year in the STK standings on Ducati 1098R) and Sylvain Barrier (6th with Team Garnier Junior Racing on the S1000RR).
Check back with us later today or tomorrow for more pics and interviews.
