Live TEST BMW R 1200 RT 2010

Here’s a set of live test pics of the BMW R 1200 RT, the queen of touring bikes from BMW. I was once a passenger on one a friend of mine owns and to say its like cruising around on an open-air armchair is to say the least. The touring qualifications of this bike would seem to be undisputed - it has so far sold 170,000 units which is a fact not to go unnoticed in the motorcycling world. The new R 1200 RT has a sportier and more modern look than the previous version, but don’t let that fool you - this is exactly the kind of luxury you’d expect from a two-wheeled BMW.

The BMW R 1200 RT is fitted with plenty of technology, including cruise-control for longer rides, suspension management system (ESA), and traction control (ASC). Despite its bulky appearance and 250-kg weight , this BMW touring is incredibly easy to ride. It has been designed as the perfect, smooth, easy going touring companion you’ve always wanted - it’s a shame you’re passenger partner won’t be as laid back.

The R 1200 RT has incredible stability and corners well, although you should be carefully when risking a more sports leaning bend as the bike will take it wide. The BMW R 1200 RT is equipped with a boxer engine with DOHC technology and now has 110 hp and 120 Nm of torque. While clearly some problems may be encountered when manoeuvering the hefty bike, these figures attest to a powerful touring machine that’s easy to ride once in second gear. It will even adapt to some city riding and certainly urban commuting if needed.

BMW R 1200 RT 2010

The BMW R 1200 RT features a new boxer engine for 2010, giving the touring bike greater dynamism and riding feel. The new motor is the same double overhead camshaft (DOHC) on the BMW HP2 Sport, with some further updates and modifications. It is a flat twin, 1,170 cc engine with 110 hp and 120 Nm of torque at 6,000 rpm.

The new R 1200 RT features improved torque and acceleration, with a smoother torque curve, electronic suspension adjustment, standard ABS and newly designed fairing. BMW hasn’t ignored the finer touch with the revision of its R 1200 RT, redesigning the handle controls and including the three riding modes of Comfort, Normal and Sport.

For further details, including technical specs and greater explanations from BMW, see the material after the jump, along with a gallery of official pics of the new BMW R 1200 RT touring.

BMW R1200GS engine pics

The new BMW R1200GS gets some significant engine updates in a bike perhaps not meant to be revolutionary, but that has become an icon in the world of European motorcycling. It has DOHC cylinder head and cam set-up, with different valve positioning and overall lower emissions.

For full details on the whole valve cover/cylinder head cover and camshaft modifications, see Hell for Leather’s comments section which has some nice technical info. The BMW R1200GS should have 115 hp, with spark plug and cylinder modifications for greater fuel emission and to enter into Euro4 emissions laws. The BMW R1200GS will appear with the R 1200R and R1200RT at this year’s EICMA so stay tuned.

The R1200GS is already in production, ready for sales success in 2010, and we should see an interesting battle between it and the road enduro Ducati Multistrada/Stradaperta. Take your bets now…
