Ducati C12-R Superbike concept by Anthony Colard

By Alison

After we saw the Ducati Car concept, here is Anthony Colard’s two-wheel Ducati superbike design concept. Based on the 1098 and 1198 chassis, Colard set out to improve on what he saw as some of the problems with the 1098 design. He used to work at the Ducati Design Center, rubbing shoulders with Gianni Fabbro (1098 senior designer) and so we figure he can easily be a go-to man for some of the pros and cons of the Ducati design.

The C12-R has strong roots in Ducati tradition, but with Colard developing a project to put his own (improved) stamp on, he is now working on a limited production of the concept. The C12-R, which started as a C11-R, originally had a big change at the rear of the bike in the form of MotoGP-style exhaust in the lower fairing and tail section. With the next step to the C12-R, Colard replaced that exhaust with a more classic Ducati underseat style.

Rather than a perfectly smooth fairing, the body panels are more complex and vented, creating a more intricate design than the straight, clean lines of the Ducati 1098. Colard has managed to avoid going overboard though, and the C12-R is still clearly a Ducati, but it just looks more like a next generation 1098 model.

Harley Davidson 2020 concept by Jonathan Russel

2020 Harley Davidson concept

Should Harley Davidson still be around in 2020 to produce “interesting and desirable product”, here is Jonathan Russel’s vision of what that future product could look like. This gallery shows a 2020 Harley Davidson concept with an Apple technology touch. The futuristic bike is not something you’d normally see in Harley Davidson’s line-up of air cooled V-twins and cruisers, but the company could borrow a couple of elements from this concept and create something to really turn heads.

The “2020 Harley Davidson 1″ (which needs a new name), has laser cut etchings with perforated features to let LED lights shine through. The instruments are all tank-mounted, including a GPS unit and lots of aluminium would make this one light, fast Harley. The idea behind letting the light shine through the frame reflects the Apple Macbook Pro on-off light feature.

While Russel’s design is very futuristic and also very much on paper, the idea of revolutionising at least one Harley Davidson model is very welcome. The brand desperately needs some new life and a fresh approach which doesn’t mean it has to abandon its core American ideals. For more details, see the HD concept gallery below.

Britten V1000E Motorcycle Concept

By Toni M.

/Britten Electric Concept

It’s always interesting to see what designers can come up with when they set their mind to it. This electric motorcycle concept is what Kiwi designer Selwyn Shadbolt calls the “Britten V1000E” a design tribute to the original V1000.

While no specs have been released, the bike features a single large capacity electric engine and the latest rage among designers, hubless wheels.

Russian designer Michael Smolyanov has come up with this eye-catching green and yellow concept chopper that is very eco-friendly.

The M-Org or Organic Bike as it’s been called, is entirely made from grown organic materials, that includes the frame, the suspensions and the steering components, which according to the designer makes the bike much more lighter and stronger.

Ducati concept: 599 Mono vs KTM RC4

By Alison

Ducati concept 599 Mono by Dan Anderson

Check out this sexy Ducati concept, called the 599 Mono, designed by Dan Anderson, of Voltra fame. This Ducati is designed as a single-cylinder sportsbike to rival the KTM RC4. The artist’s impression shows not only the hot looks, but also gives us an idea of what we would expect technically. It has a four-valve, desmo head engine and should weigh in at about 160 kg.

Jaguar Motorcyle becomes NightShadow (w/video)

By Toni M.

Almost a year ago we showed you the pics of a highly singular motorcycle concept created by Massow Concept Cycles and designed by interior designer Barend Hemmes a Jaguar shaped motorcycle. The big cat has been renamed NightShadow and it’s perfectly street legal. Even though it’s powered by 1200cc engine the bike’s top speed is only about 50mph and looks pretty uncomfortable to ride for long distances, unless you have a true penchant for riding in a drag racing position.

After the jump you can check out the video of the Jaguar bike from idea to conception and the pics of the new concept that Hemmes is now working on, a bull shaped motorcycle that Red Bull Energy drinks should like.

BMW Concept 6 to be produced: video close-up

By Alison

The BMW Concept 6 presented at this year’s EICMA can be seen in this video, which shows the in-line six cylinder engine technology on the motorcycle. I’ll admit I wasn’t at first convinced by the “it’s only slightly wider than a classic four-cylinder”, but seeing the video, it isn’t, in fact an enormous monstrosity. The front of the bike is obviously bulky but a smooth fairing and some great colours make it look slimmer than what it actuall is, and if you like it then you’re probably into the futuristic look anyway.

BMW’s aim has not been to fit just any straight six onto a motorcycle, but to fit one that wouldn’t be too wide or too long, depending on which way you assembled it. BMW is so convinced that this will be a market winner, that it will go into production, first as a luxury touring model. For more details, see the full press release after the jump.

Lift off: CR&S Duu concept live at EICMA

By Alison

CRS Duu Eicma 2009

The big Italian cruiser DUU from CR&S is like having a spacemobile live on the floor at EICMA. The twin-cylinder concept is more like an artwork than a motorcycle, which is just how it’s been designed. We’ll bring you more details of the DUU later, and if you want more on the story of Italian CR&S workshop, see the CR&S motorcycle design videos and drawings.

The Yamaha Super Ténéré Concept with Video

By Toni M.

Yamaha surprised everyone at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show when they partially ‘unveiled’ their concept of the Super Ténéré in a quasi North African Tuareg/Berber style dress.

Yamaha’s new maxi enduro will probably be officially launched next year and try to take a bite out of BMW’s segement of the market. The Super Ténéré will have 1200cc parallel twin engine with shaft drive, equipped with traction control, ABS with three different settings, a unified brake system (UBS) and side mounted radiators.

Verdandi Motorcycle Concept

By Toni M.

A lot of interesting motorcycle concepts seem to be coming out of universities these days, and this is the latest and it comes from Chalmers University in Gothenburg. The idea behind the Verdandi project was to investigate why fewer women than men ride motorcycles, and what can be done to attract female users and customers to the motorcycle market.

The end result was that women want safety, low enviromental impact, comfort and ergonomics, storage and identity and this concept bike supposedly encompasses all six features.

Not bad, but from this woman’s point of view, I’m keeping my custom bike.

Honda U3-X video: future city transport

By Alison

The Honda U3-X looks just like the kind of contraption I could fall off without too much effort. It’s an intriguing concept however, half segway, half….electric motorcycle? The U3-X seems to work via the sitting weight transfer of the passenger, and can travel at 6 km/hr. It weighs 10 kilos and looks like other pedestrian vehicles for getting around town more quickly. The U3-X will be presented at the next Tokyo motor show. What I really want to know is whether it will do my abs and love handles, or should I just stick to walking…?
