The new Factory Aprilia Millennium Technologies team finished in the top ten at the Daytona 200. This was the first ever race for the team and rider Chaz Davies besides finishing 7th also took the fastest lap of the event. Other rider, Ben Johnson took 24th with his RSV 1000 R Factory.

When I posted the other day about Scott Russell driving at the Rolex 24 at Daytona, his 2001 Daytona 200 horrific accident instantly came back to mind.

Anticipating the flag on a re-start, he stalled his Ducati 996. As he coasted to the edge of the track, a racer behind him clipped his handlebars, sending both riders sprawling. The other racer went into the grass. Russell went back onto the track only to have himself and his motorcycle t-boned by John Pierson. Parts and riders littered the track, as one of the bikes burned. He would spend two weeks in the hospital undergoing numerous surgeries and these injuries would ultimately end his career.

This is pretty rare piece of race footage from the 1953 Daytona 200, where they used to race directly on the beach of Daytona and on the highway before the construction of the Daytona Speedway .

According to the newspapers of that year the 1953 Daytona 200 left one rider dead and one spectator dead and other six injured. Of the 113 starters only 39 finished the 48 laps.

Paul Goldsmith the winner of this race aboard a Harley Davidson “K” was one of the leading motorcycle racers during the late 1940s through the mid-1950s. After retiring from motorcycle racing, Goldsmith went on to a very successful automobile racing career. He won the final NASCAR race run at this same beach course in 1958. He also competed several times in the Indianapolis 500, finishing third in 1960.
