The last frontier on the “first to” records in the world of motorcycling could be from female riders. After Elena Myers was the first woman to get an AMA Pro victory and will lap Indianapolis on the Suzuki GSV-R this year, Shilena Moreda will be the first female rider to compete at Indianapolis this weekend in AMA Pro Racing. That’s quite a first considering the 100-year history behind this track.

Moreda says:

I am very excited to be a part of this huge race, and to not only be the first female to race in the AMA Pro XR1200 class, but the first female ever in the 100-year history of the track to race on a motorcycle at Indy! My father is a huge fan of the Brickyard, and we were naturally excited about racing at a track that has strong ties to the dairy industry.

That last comment comes from the fact that Moreda learned to ride bikes while growing up on a dairy farm. And she has one other claim to fame - being a former District 3 California Dairy Princess. She’s apparently a fourth-generation motorcycle racer and a fifth-generation dairy farmer meaning she could be right at home in the historic atmosphere of the track. Nice stuff from our female riders!

The 2010 Suomy range of jackets includes new models, Nesso and Tremezzo. The Nesso jacket, which also has its partner Comacina jacket made specifically for female riders, is made from nylon and has reflective inserts for safety. It has removable padding on the shoulders, elbows and forearms, and a removable inner lining for all-season use. The Nesso or Comacina jacket is available in black and in sizes 46 to 58 for men (European sizing, and for women from S to XL. No pricing is available yet.

The Tremezzo is also a new jacket for 2010, called Piona for female riders. It’s a leather jacket with shoulder, elbow and forearm removable protection, external zip pockets and removable inner lining. It has adjustable straps for the waist and wrists and a joining zip to attach trousers if needed. It comes in black and white or black and grey, in the same sizes as above. The California Superbike School is holding its first ever women’s session in the UK at Silverstone on September 11. We don’t normally do the feminist thing on Two Wheels, but for you lady bikers in the UK, this could be a good opportunity to get some great tips.

The session is exclusively for women and comes after a successful women’s only day for the CSS in South Africa. Six women from Dubai’s Department of Protective Security and Emergency have been chosen to form the Gulf region’s first all-woman quick response team. They have been hand-picked to act as bodyguards to heads of state, ministers, top officials and their families, particularly women.

They are specially military-trained in counter-terrorism, 9mm marksmanship and anti-riot control. They use Suzuki GSX-R1000’s for patrol bikes as well as the standard Yamaha 1200’s with panniers, horns and lights. Part of the training involves two female cops riding on one bike. While one drives the bike, the other keeps an eye out for emergencies.

The first all-women quick response team is the brainchild of Brigadier Mohammad Eid Al Mansouri, Director of the General Department of Protective Security and Emergency Department of Dubai Police.
“They are the pioneers – the first such team in our department. Their job is to protect VIPs in Dubai. We are proud of this well-trained female team that can be assembled at a short notice to protect female VIPs round-the-clock. They work hand-in-hand with their male counterparts.”

It was a perfect year for the Italian female rider Paola Cazzola, who was riding with the Yamaha YZF-R1 from the Yamaha team Pielle Moto- Villa Sandra. Paola won the five races in the Championship, achieved five pole positions and rode four fastest lap times.

Paola said to Twhowheelsblog, that she wants to thank her team for the strong performances from the bike: “The team was very professional and the bike was strong and fast during the entire season.”

Paola just returned from the desert after a trip to the Sahara for a raid and said to Twowheelsblog : “It was all very good this year, I went for a good winter training and the bike and team were perfect. In 2009, I want to perform again in the Italian Female Championship and I really hope to join the Italian Superbike Championship.” To the question of this strong motivation, Paola answered: “It’s my dream to participate in World Superbike with a wild card, that’s the goal for me.”
