Honda reveals new 700cc engine and Integra concept

By Toni M.

Honda Integra Max Scooter

After showing the first version of Mid Concept scooter at last year’s EICMA, Honda has released the first picture and details of their new engine and maxi scooter concept dubbed Integra (did Honda run out of original names?) that we’ll be seeing in November.

It’s a brand new 700cc parallel twin cylinder engine designed to work with a new and lighter-weight version of the VFR1200’s DCT dual-clutch gearbox, in addition to a six speed manual transmission.

Honda is also boasting that this new engine will get you around with 27 km/l, the best in its class and about 40% better than any of its competition in the same displacement range.

Besides the Integra, Honda will also be debuting at the EICMA, other different concepts with this new engine and we’ll have to wait and see if one of these concepts will be a mid-range motorcycle.

Honda biggest market share in Italy

By Alison

Honda_scooters_in_Italy

We came across what we thought was an interesting statistic for the Italian motorcycle market from our guys at Motoblog.it. Take a wild guess at who the market leader for motorcycles in Italy might be…. Yes, that’s right, Honda. In a market in crisis here, down 12 and 21.4 percent, some eco-incentives in November just managed to save the day but Honda doesn’t seem too concerned. So what’s the secret to their success?

Despite skipping last year’s EICMA, Honda’s presence at the 2010 EICMA show proved what kind of a market leader it is. It was back in force after a successful 2010 MotoGP season, presenting eight new bikes and two concept bikes. While this won’t have affected November sales necessarily as we’re not all rushing out to buy Hondas after EICMA, it shows an attention to the European market that Yamaha, despite its star riders, doesn’t seem to be able to give off.

Honda has also continued promotional runs with discounts on final pricing on some of its more popular models and it seems the strategy is paying off. Lose a few euros on each bike but sell a whole lot of them makes a lot of sense in what is a difficult market. It seems also that Honda’s scooter range is incredibly popular in a market saturated with scooters and that is also spoiled for choice. Leaving Piaggio, Vespa and other brands in its wake, of 53,000 Honda sales in Italy since January, 34,000 were scooter models with the SH300i leading the pack, followed by the 125 and 150 models.

Honda Faze not coming to Europe

By Alison

Honda Faze

Initial reports that the Honda Faze scooter would be coming to Europe have been denied by the company and so we won’t be seeing the new GT scooter at the 2010 EICMA show in Milan. Honda has, however, clarified that this is a decision for the short term and so apparently we will still be seeing some surprises at the show. According to reports, the Honda Faze won’t be introduced to the European market to avoid competition with the Honda PCX125 and the SW-T 400.

The decision seems a little strange though, as the Faze actually represents the more compact version of the latter scooter. Perhaps it’s more about not swamping the European market with a scooter range to big to be absorbed. The Faze itself is available in Japan as a 200cc model, and was set to be available in Europe in 125 and 300cc versions, thus being heir to the Pantheon and Foresight models. We’ll have to see what else Honda has in store for EICMA 2010.

World's first start&stop bike: Honda PCX125 more pics

By Alison

2011 Honda PCX125 scooter

Here are more pics of the Honda PCX125 scooter. It’s said to be the world’s first bike with start&stop technology which is a fuel saving device whereby the engine stops when a vehicle is stationary. This makes perfect sense for urban scooter riding in the city where this kind of technology will not only save fuel but also make it more environmental (which if you’re coming to Europe is important in their new anti-pollution laws).

Specifically, the Honda PCX125 has an engine which cuts out after three seconds of idling. A blinking orange ’stand-by’ light appears but then switches off with acceleration. The beauty of the system is that you can ride with it either on or off, although Honda claims it improves fuel efficiency by just five percent. That’s hardly going to save the world on fuel emissions but we hazard this is probably only the beginning and expect to see more of this appear on other urban mobility bikes.

Honda PCX 125 Sccoter with Stop and Go

By Toni M.

Honda PCX Scooter

The Honda PCX scooter is manufactured in Thailand under the “Made by Global Honda” banner and was first introduced into the Asian market in autumn 2009, but it’s now going to make it’s debut in Europe.

The electric-start PCX is powered by a liquid-cooled 125cc single-cylinder engine with Honda’s PGM-FI fuel injection system and V-Matic automatic transmission and and comes with a Stop and Go system. The system stops the engine three seconds after the scooter comes to a stop to improve fuel economy. The engine restarts when the throttle is opened and the system can be disengaged with a botton on the right side of the handlebar.

Honda has equipped the PCX with its Combined Braking System with a 220mm front disc brake with hydraulic three-piston caliper and a rear drum brake.

Our tests: Honda SH125i scooter

By Alison

Test Honda SH125i my 2009

Honda’s best selling scooter is updated for 2009 with the arrival of the SH125i and the SH150i. The new scooters have been modified in their style, mechanics and braking system.

We had the chance to have a little ride as the Honda SH scooter is the most sold on the Italian market with more than 500,000 models sold since it was first released back in 1984. Italy is the biggest scooter market in the world, and so the Honda success really says something.

The two motors are relatively similar in their performance and fuel consumption, at more than 30km/litre for both models. The style has taken on a more elegant and compact profile with new front and rear design, including front V-shaped headlight.
