New Husqvarna 900cc engine: the video

By Alison

We know the video has funky rock music to get the adrenalin going, but seriously, if Husqvarna does its road bikes well, we could be seeing some exciting new entries on the market. The video tells us that the new Husqvarna 900cc engine, which we took a look at recently, is a two-cylinder job and Husqvarna’s “most powerful engine ever”. That and the fact that Husqvarna comes from an offroad tradition, meaning lightweight, fun and agile bikes, certainly makes us pay attention.

Backed by BMW expertise and investment, there is no reason why Husqvarna’s new road bikes, built on a philosophy of versatile, fun and powerful bikes to ride, won’t work. Finding new market space won’t be easy, but again BMW backing on that front means they’ve got some extra bang to their buck.

As for the technology, the new Husqvarna 900cc is based on the BMW F800R engine, upgraded to give a little more power and provide that Husky sports touch. The engine is looking pretty well developed at this stage and we can’t wait to see how the whole package is going to come together in the end.

New Husqvarna 900cc engine

As part of its new Husqvarna road bike range, the company is investing in some new technology despite borrowing parts from big sister, BMW. The new path that the company is taking provides it with a challenge in making road bikes with a Husqvarna character - developing a new offering of modern bikes based on fun, high performance and versatility.

The Husqvarna brand could easily fit those characteristics with the right investment and brand development. Until now, Husqvarna bikes have always been characterised by their offroad capabilities and compact motors; but in the new project Husqvarna engineers have had to choose the right engine from the BMW offering, and adapt it to their needs.

The solution chosen so far is the BMW 800cc twin parallel unit which equips the BMW F800R. It will be modified to suit the ambitious new project though, with engineers adding a higher performance, sportier feel and taking the new Husqvarna engine to 900cc in the process. Many of the internal engine components have been modified to improve torque and power distribution. The filter box and outlets have been redesigned to upgrade performance while decreasing weight.

New Husqvarna road bikes

Husqvarna Concept Studio Mille3 Eicma 2010

Husqvarna roadgoing models are set to become part of the portfolio of the Husqvarna brand under BMW management. The company hopes to be able to continue its dirt bike tradition while exploring the new area of road bikes, producing five new Husqvarna road bikes. The bikes should be announced as part of Husqvarna’s five-year company plan, and the first bikes off the rank will be equipped with a twin-cylinder Rotax 800cc engine from the BMW GS range.

It seems that the new range has been planned off the development of the sexy and successful Husqvarna Mille3 Concept that was revealed at the 2010 EICMA show. The idea behind the new Husqvarna range is to have models that distinguish themselves from the BMW line-up, with a different style, lightweight principles and a younger target market. More after the jump plus a post coming up on just Husqvarna is developing its new range.

MCN says the new models will be the following:
