Pic of the day: Moto Morini Deltabox V-Twin

By Alison

Moto Morini Deltabox V-Twin engine design

It’s only when you delve into history like this that you realise what a shame it is that a company like Moto Morini is closing. This photo of the Morini Deltabox (which looks like it’s scanned from a magazine, but we can’t be sure) from Motoblog.it, shows the V-Twin engine which was designed by Italy’s famous motorcycle engineer, Franco Lambertini.

While other Italian motorcycle companies are also credited with the innovation and use of the V-Twin engine, it is generally considered that Lambertini is the father of the design. During his career, he worked at Moto Morini, and when the company was under Cagiva ownership it is said the new owners actually put aside his original drawing for a v-twin.

Lambertini then moved on to Piaggio Group for a while, before going back to Morini and working on projects for Benelli and other development of new Morini models. Curiously, Lambertini has a background in automobiles and first worked for Ferrari which makes quite a list of Italian industrial design in general. See more on Lambertini in an interview with the Morini Club.

Borile B450Scrambler preview

By Alison

Borile B450Scrambler preview

The 2011 EICMA show will host the new Borile B450Scrambler. Quite the retro café racer, the new B450Scrambler gets a new Ducati engine and components, and while not much has been released so far, what we do know from the preview are the following technical details. We get: bore and stroke of 98 and 60, fuel injection and electronic ignition. The front should house a 19-inch wheel, and 18 inches at the rear.

The Borile Scrambler model will be one of the first to come out of this boutique Italian motorcycle manufacturer, revived only last year. Among the retro styled bikes being developed are the road scrambler, a retro enduro, a multi-purpose bike and a custom-built B500Ricki. The EICMA show will be on from November 8 to 13 and there will be plenty to see again this year as the show proves itself the best motorcycle event in Europe.

CR&S DUU live at 2010 EICMA

By Alison

CRS stand live Eicma 2010

CR&S hand-built bikes from Italy continue to fascinate and here are live pics from EICMA of the CR&S DUU model. It has had a quick ascension from last year’s protoype and has already entered production for those wanting a real, custom-built motorcycle. After the Ducati Diavel, it’s the only other Italian cruiser model at the 2010 EICMA but if you’re seriously into your cruisers, this custom will steal the show for you over the Diavel, any day.

In fact, the DUU is a true amalgamation of European design on an American icon. Taking the cruiser bike history and an American engine, CR&S has tried to stick to European design principles in terms of chassis quality and pure, clean style. The company says more than 130 orders have already been placed meaning that its workshop approach has worked so far.

Ducati Diavel pics and details

2011 Ducati Diavel official pics

The Ducati Diavel will probably get a mixed reception as it’s unveiled at the 2010 EICMA show this week. A Ducati cruiser presented on home turf in Italy might not win the crowds and we’ve already had inklings that this will be a model to polerise more than a few. This is mostly though, because it’s an Italian cruiser - kind of the antithesis of what you’d expect from Italian motorcycle design - and not because Ducati has put together something ordinary.

The Diavel weighs just 210 kg and has 162 hp and 127 Nm of torque, meaning it’s Ducati’s take on what a cruiser is and could be. Design doubts aside, Ducati has equipped the Diavel will plenty of goodies including ride-by-wire technology, LED lights, tank-mounted instrumentation, Marzocchi forks and Brembo monoblock brakes. The mega rear wheel is almost offensive, but then this will be a bike for attention grabbers and Ducati has invested in some serious tyre technology, working with Pirelli to create a smooth centre surface for cruising and gripping sides for better cornering.

The Ducati cruiser will also be offered in a new Ducati Diavel Carbon version which drops weight further to 207 kg. Given concerns over cost of the standard Diavel, we reckong the carbon job will probably be prohibitive for most wanting one of these unless the baby boomers have got their savings set aside just for this. They will probably be the main market for the Diavel, with Ducati counting on its bulky style and cruising image to appeal, but we’ll be interested to see in the future how this model fares, particularly on the European market. See after the jump for more pics, the technical specs (standard version) and the official Diavel video.

Moto Guzzi Griso and Ducati Hypermotard design concepts

Griso and Hypermotard design concepts

Italian motorcycle design just got a touch of new talent with students from the IED design institute creating these designs based on the Moto Guzzi Griso and the Ducati Hypermotard. The Griso is a splendid bike but in this revolutionary design it’s almost unrecognisable. The design brief in this case was to change only the upper structures and fairing, which also applied to the Ducati Hypermotard project.

The nine students in their second year at the European design institute had carte blanche to do as they liked to two bikes provided. The bikes had no seat, fairings, fuel tank or exhaust. The designs produced seem to have extended the bikes charisma and are certainly worthy of the label of exciting design.

The Griso, an example of Moto Guzzi’s characteristic retro style, gets catapulted into the future with angular looks, a redesigned aerodynamic but chunky front, and a strong rear look. Knowing it’s a Griso you can still see the original under the fairings, but otherwise it’s well disguised and we’re quite taken with it, particularly from a front-on view.

Bimota DB6 SuperLight

Bimota has presented its DB6 SuperLight model at the Rome Motodays event. These live pics show the bike, which is based on the Bimota DB6 Delirio. It’s a prototype which has been produced in collaboration with the Bike Research lab and centres on a new-look fork-chassis combination which further accentuates the extreme style of the DB6.

The Bimota DB6 SuperLight is already in testing phase and could even appear on the market in Bimonta dealerships by the end of the year. The aim is to keep the SuperLight with a weight of 158 kg in what has been an innovative project for the company. See if you like it in the pics below.

Lambretta in 125cc world championship

By Alison

Lambretta racing 125cc

Historic Italian scooter brand Lambretta will participate in the 125cc class of the world championship, in the form of the “Lambretta Reparto Corse” team. The team will be directed by Nicola Casadei, and will have Giancarlo Cecchini as its technical director. The team is substituting the Loncin team and will have the same mechanics and technical support staff, although new riders are expected.

The Lambretta riders are currently unknown, although it’s likely there will be an Italian and two international riders. Names mentioned so far include Marco Ravaioli and Luis Salom. Lambretta is currently back in Italian hands, with owners Motom Italia Spa acquiring the company in 2007. It will be a curious alliance, that of sportsbikes with scooters, but the plan is that some of the technology developed will appear on Lambretta scooters, making them among the most innovative on the market. See what the world championship is getting itself into with the Lambretta Pato commercial after the jump, originally posted here.

Vyrus 987 C3 4V: live pics and official details

By Alison

vyrus 987 c34v

The Vyrus 987 C3 4V is equipped with the Ducati 1198 engine and is a real missile on wheels. It has a top speed of 310 km/hr with 184 hp and weighs just 155 kg. This is another stunning example of Italian motorcycle design, created by Ascanio Rodrigo who is using with hub-centre steering. This system that encloses the steering element in the front wheel and separates it from braking and suspension functions.

Together with the chassis, the hub-centre steering creates an easy ride, but don’t let the Vyrus workshop fool you into thinking this is an easygoing bike. In addition to the horse power, the Ducati engine has 13.5 Kgm of torque (approximately 130 Nm) at just 7,500 rpm. A 211-hp version may also turn up, making this the world’s most powerful street-legal bike. Check it out in the gallery - the live pics are from the Motor Bike Expo, courtesy of the guys at Motoblog.it.

Lift off: CR&S Duu concept live at EICMA

CRS Duu Eicma 2009

The big Italian cruiser DUU from CR&S is like having a spacemobile live on the floor at EICMA. The twin-cylinder concept is more like an artwork than a motorcycle, which is just how it’s been designed. We’ll bring you more details of the DUU later, and if you want more on the story of Italian CR&S workshop, see the CR&S motorcycle design videos and drawings.

New Italian superbike cruiser: the CR&S DUU Concept

By Alison

CR

Milanese firm CR&S presented its first bike Vun at last year’s EICMA show, and they’re gearing up for the 2009 EICMA with this second creation, the DUU. The model continues the Cafe Racers & Superbikes quirky styling, with a two-cylinder, 2000cc engine, equipping a mix of cruiser/superbike design.

Depending on your tastes, you may like this cafe racer come streetfighter look, or you may find it completely over the top. CR&S itself says:

The CR&S “DUU” (”DUU” in Milanese dialect is for “Two”) actually is a “concept bike” which will be first displayed on next November 10/15 at Milano Int. Bike Show - EICMA [ CR&S: Hall. 2 - Booth I-30].

MV Agusta F3 700 design

By Alison

MV Augusta F3 700

This drawing comes from design student Mirco, and features an MV Agusta F3 700. Mirco is a fan of Transportation Design and is looking to specialise in motorcycle renderings and design (he’s currently in his second year).

Mirco is undertaking the risky job (so he defines it) of trying to make the MV Agusta F4 more interesting. He uses hand digital technology and this is his first attempt of the F3 700, before moving on to working on the 3D version.

Urban Scrambler by TpR - Italian Factory

By Alison

Urban Scrambler by TpR

Here’s a look an Italian Urban Scrambler, the first motorcycle designed by TPR Italian Factory. The new company has been established by Pietro Figini, and designed this Urban Scrambler, presenting it to the Italian press recently.

Pietro Figini, known as “Figio” had decided that no Italian offering on the market expressed character, style and uniqueness, and so he designed this, as the bike he had been looking for. His father, Figio Senior, is a well-known collector and restorer of Vespas.

Figini has a passion for English motorcycles, and so decided to use a twin cylinder 800cc engine as a base, along with the Triumph Bonneville’s double crade chassis. The rest of the bike then went into production, taking inspiration from bikes from the 1960’s.

The Urban Scrambler is also a performance bike, with work on the engine and fuel system resulting in a respectable 75 hp. Alluminium has been extensively used on the bike, making for a weight of approximately 180 kg. Now all we can do is wait to try it… Technical specs after the jump.
