WSBK Magny-Cours: Cal Crutchlow grabs last Superpole of the season

By Toni M.

cal crutchlow

Cal Crutchlow took his sixth Superpole of the season ahead of tomorrow’s World Superbike races at Magny-Cours and also set the fastest lap of the French circuit breaking Ben Spies’ last year record with his best lap of 1′37.699.

The Yamaha Sterilgarda rider, who will be in MotoGP next season, was followed by an amazing soon to be unemployed Sylvain Guintoli who has found form in front of his home audience and he was just 0.069s from a superpole expert like Crutchlow. Jakub Smrz on the privateer Aprilia was also very close to the Brit’s pole time just 0.085s off taking the third spot ahead of factory Aprilia World Champion Max Biaggi who could not break the 1.38 barrier having wasted both his qualifying tires in SP2.

The second row will see Michel Fabrizio, another rider who has still to find a new team and injured Jonathan Rea who is desperately looking to keep his third place in the standings from Carlos Checa, who qualified behind the Ten Kate Honda rider.

Noriyuki Haga, who crashed both his Ducati’s in the second free practice session, giving his team a lot of work to do before the Superpole finished in eighth. Ninth went to Troy Corser who finished ahead of his future BMW team mate Leon Haslam.

WSBK: First Look at Smrz's Aprilia RSV4 with Pata Livery

By Toni M.

pata b&g aprilia

Here’s the Aprilia RSV4 with B&G Racing livery that will be using starting at this upcoming round at Brno and for the rest of the 2010 World Superbike Championship, after the team decided to switch manufacturers.

Switching from Ducati wasn’t a last minute idea for team managers Marco Borciani and Mirco Guandalini, because they were already in talks with both Aprilia and BMW back in May and the main reason behind the switch was an apparent lack of help by Ducati in solving reliability and technical issues on the 1098RS.

“We really wanted to reach this deal. We are confident that as a result of this collaboration, we will be able to prepare for Smrz the best machine in Superbike, if we look at the overall standings. However, changing will not be easy, but we are working very hard in order for us to be at our best at Brno, where we will be in three days time. I’m sure this change will be exciting for our rider too, who has been slowed down by technical issues lately and his hard work did not bear fruit.” stated Borciani and Guandalini.

B&G Racing will be the first Aprilia satellite team in the WSBK Championship.

WSBK: Pata B&G Team Switches Manufacturer, will Race Aprilia from Brno

By Toni M.

smrz

We knew that Pata B&G team managers Marco Borciani and Mirco Guandalini were interested in switching from Ducati to a BMW or Aprilia for next year’s Superbike season, however the small Italian team who fields Czech rider Jakub Smrz will be make the switch for the upcoming Brno round to an Aprilia RSV4 Factory.

Jakub Smrz will now have to start anew with a completely different bike as his team who has always worked on Ducati’s. According to Motosprint.com Smrz is already at Brno coming to grips with the new bike by riding his father’s RSV4.

Mirco Guandalini commenting on the change: “It’s a great coup for our team and also for Aprilia. We will finish the season with the Aprilia RSV4 and we are laying the foundations for continuing the relationship in 2011. All this is due to our sponsors, that are giving us a big hand. With Ducati we complained about several breakdowns, but the company didn’t give us hand and we preferred to explore new opportunities. I think that Kuba with the four-cylinder bike can obtain results that his talent deserves. “

Jakub Smrz tests BMW S 1000 RR at Mugello

By Toni M.

jakub smrz

World Superbike BMW Motorrad Motorsport team was at the Mugello doing development work with test rider Steve Martin, and as we anticipated last month, Jakub Smrz got his chance to ride Troy Corser’s official BMW S 1000 RR.

Team Pata B&G are not completely satisfied with their Ducati’s and are thinking of switching marques and are already in talks with Aprilia and BMW to see if either of these manufacturers are willing to supply them with the motorcycles.

On Tuesday Smrz re-learned the track (the last time he was at the Mugello was back when he was riding in the 125cc and 250cc GP championships) and learned at little about the difficulties in setting up the German superbike and on Wednesday the Czech rider put in about thirty laps with track temperatures reaching 60°C and an unofficial best lap in the 1.53’s.

WSBK Miller: Biaggi Breaks Circuit Record Taking QP2

By Toni M.

Biaggi

Max Biaggi clocked in the best time at the end of the second qualifying practice at Miller Motorsports Park, ahead of today’s Superpole session.

The Italian on his Aprilia RSV4F now using the new gear driven camshaft, stopped the clock at 1′48.115 which is also the new circuit record, bettering Carlos Checa’s 2008 best lap by 78 thousandths of second. The Roman Emperor remained hidden for most of the practice, but in the end jumped up to the top of the charts.

Second with a gap of 0.174s was Jakub Smrz who seems to love the Utah circuit, never venturing out of the top five in all the sessions so far. Following the Pata B&G rider was BMW’s Troy Corser, who made a big improvement to take third spot. Fourth and fifth were the Carlos Checa and Shane Byrne respectively.

Michel Fabrizio ended up in sixth behind the the privateer Ducati duo. Cal Crutchlow took the seventh spot, followed by two Leon’s; Haslam who couldn’t better his yesterday’s Q1 times and Camier, who hit the top of the speed charts at 311kph on his Aprilia, before crashing in the final minutes. Rounding out the top ten was Yamaha’s James Toseland.

Both Jonathan Rea and Noriyuki Haga ended up behind privateer Luca Scassa in 12th and 13th. Matteo Baiocco was last and therefore is out of the Superpole.

QP2 Results after the jump.

WSBK Kyalami: Michel Fabrizio draws first blood in free practice

By Toni M.

Kyalami circuit

Free practice at Kyalami saw Michel Fabrizio end up on the top of the charts and it seems for the moment that the Bayliss cure is working at least for the Italian rider and that the track is good for all the Ducati riders. Fabrizio stopped the clock at 1′39.081, two and half tenths faster than second place Jakub Smrz on the B&G Pata private Ducati.

Third went to Max Biaggi who was worried that his Aprilia RSV4 wouldn’t be competitive enought on the South African circuit. Biaggi finished in front of both Althea Racing riders Carlos Checa and Shane Byrne, with Checa ending up in front of his team mate despite a small crash.

Jonathan Rea was sixth and the first rider not to break the 1.40 mark followed by two other Brit riders, Cal Crutchlow and Leon Haslam who was just 0.006 from the Sterilgarda Yamaha rider. Max Neukirchner was ninth and Noriyuki Haga closed out the top ten.

Wildcard and local favourite Sheridan Morais took the 18th spot on his Aprilia.
