It looks like Paul Bird has changed his mind regarding Shane Byrne taking James Ellison’s place in the upcoming Le Mans GP as the PBM UK team has now confirmed that Ellison will be regularily taking his place on the grid next week.
It seemed that Bird wanted his BSB rider to give a second opinion on the severe chatter issues that Ellison has been lamenting on his Aprilia ART, but despite confirming faith in Ellison, the team doesn’t dismiss that in some later date either Byrne or Stuart Easton could test or even race the CRT bike.
PBM UK press release:
Following recent speculation regarding James Ellison’s participation in the 2012 MotoGP World Championship, the Paul Bird Motorsport Team (PBM UK) wishes to clarify that James will continue to race the CRT-specification Aprilia ART starting with the French Grand Prix at Le Mans on May 20th.

Shane Byrne just took his first race win in the third British Superbike race at Oulton Park today and in two weeks time will find himself aboard an ART/CRT machine temporarily replacing James Ellison in the upcoming MotoGP race at Le Mans, according to several British websites.
Apparently team owner Paul Bird wants a second opinion on the severe chatter issues that Ellison has been struggling with.
The two-time British Superbike champion has already raced in MotoGP, but it was back in 2004 and 2005 with Aprilia (9 starts), Team Roberts on a KTM and then replaced Troy Bayliss for two races in Team Pons.

Jorge Lorenzo and James Ellison were the first riders to head out on track at Jerez just a few minutes ago for the final pre-season MotoGP test and the PBM (Paul Bird Motorsport) team revealed their 2012 red, white and blue livery on their ART machine for their debut season in MotoGP under the CRT rules.

James Ellison has penned a deal with Parkalgar Honda team and will contest in the 2011 World Supersport Championship in a new formed satellite team called PTR Parkalgar Honda.
Ellison is only thirty, but is a two times European Superstock Champion, World Endurance Champion a former MotoGP rider (Harris WCM, Blata, Yamaha Tech3) and has been racing in the British Superbikes championship after doing a stint in the AMA.
“I am very excited to be racing for PTR Parkalgar Honda in the World Supersport Championship, it is a proven race winning team that will give me the bike and opportunity to show what I am capable of. These sort of chances don’t come along everyday and after riding the PTR Parkalgar Honda bike a couple of times I know how fast it really is and that I should be able to compete for wins and the Championship. That is my aim, and the team’s so we share the same ambition. I am looking forward to working with Sam and Miguel, with my experience I hope to be able to help them both realise their full potential. I am determined to show the world what James Ellison is capable of and this is the best opportunity I could wish for, I can’t wait for the season to start.”
PTR Parkalgar Honda Team Manager Simon Buckmaster has also anticipated that he could run a World Superbike team in 2012 depending on Ellison’s results and funding.
The next British Superbike round takes place this weekend from May 21-23 at Cadwell Park and it looks like Tommy Hill from the Worx Crescent Suzuki team could run away with the title. He sits on 13 points overall at this stage, after three wins, and is followed by Josh Brookes with the HM Plant Honda team on five points. James Ellison and Stuart Easton are sharing third spot on four points each at this stage but with another six rounds to go before the top six contenders battle it out, it could prove an exciting few months. Check out all the action from Oulton Park with Race 1 above, Race 2 below and a couple of interviews with Leon Haslam and Chris Walker for all the inside view on riding techniques, bike set-ups and more.
