James Toseland gets engaged

By Toni M.

james toseland

It really seems like a piece of news/gossip more up TMZs or Perez Hilton’s alley than ours, but former two time Superbike champion James Toseland has announced his engagement to singer-songwriter Katie Melua via his Facebook page.

Hey everyone, I’ve got some happy news to share with you, I asked Katie to marry me and she said Yes! As you can imagine, I am a very happy man right now :)

Melua and Toseland started dating last April, but revealed their relationship to the public last July and she saw him race for the first time during the Silverstone round.

“Giacomino” (little James) as he’s be fondly nicknamed by his Italian fans, announced his retirement from racing last September following his career stopping wrist injury that he sustained at Aragon while testing for BMW Italia.

Toseland seems to have picked up a singing contract by a record company and in his spare time is helping World Superstock rider Sylvain Barrier prepare for the 2012 season.

James Toseland retires from racing

By Toni M.

james toseland

Two-time World Superbike Champion James Toseland has been forced to announce his retirement from racing.

The British rider’s long battle to return to fitness after the wrist injury he sustained in a crash with his BMW Italia Superbike during private test at the Motorland Aragon circuit last March , has ended his racing career after competing in his 201st Superbike race just last Sunday at Nurburgring, where he crashed under a torrential rain shower in race 2.

Unable to properly move his wrist, the 31-year old Yorkshireman has been told that it is no longer safe for him to continue his career and his retirement will go into effect immediately.

Toseland won the 2004 Superbike World Championship with the Fila Ducati team and then in 2007 with Ten Kate Honda and in 2008 moved to MotoGP to spend two season’s riding for Herve Poncharal’s Yamaha Tech3 team and after a gruelling 2009, returned to World Superbikes where he had another tough year with Yamaha Sterilgarda and in 2011 joined the new BMW Italia World Superbike team.

Here’s the letter that he posted on his personal website:

James Toseland's crash sequence at Nurburgring

By Toni M.

James Toseland Nurburgring 2011 - Race 2

We won’t harp on any longer about the treacherous conditions during Race 2 at Nurburgring, but thanks to photographer Silvio Tosseghini who sent these great photos to Motoblog.it, we can show you an image sequence of James Toseland’s crash at the German track.

The BMW Italia rider who celebrated his 200th WSBK race earlier in the day with a 13th place, was riding in 13th in race 2 when he crashed out his BMW S1000RR and you can see how he tries to protect his right wrist from taking another beating after his long recovery period.

“It’s been a difficult weekend,” wrote Toseland on his personal website. “We’ve had to work much harder than expected on the set-up for this track but I was pleased to finish in the points in race one. Race two was a different story and a crash was the last thing I needed, particularly at this stage in the season. The rumour mill is already in overdrive ahead of next season, so I find that the best way to deal with that is to just ignore the heresy and focus on getting the results. Needless to say that things didn’t go to plan, but on a positive note, at least I now know that I can crash and bounce back. For months I’ve been riding around my injury and approaching the races tentatively to ensure that I don’t setback my recovery and I feel like I don’t have to do that anymore. I’m as determined and hungry as ever to get back to the front of the races, where I believe I belong, so I need to just move on and keep that focus.”

James Toseland to test fitness at Mugello

By Toni M.

toseland

James Toseland will make another attempt to ride in the ninth round of the World Superbike championship at Silverstone at the end of this month.

The BMW Italia rider who has had his 2011 season disrupted by a serious hand injury picked up at Aragon during a private test last March, had to bow out of the last round at Brno after the first free practice due to the lingering problems to his wrist and was substituted by Lorenzo Lanzi.

However, the Englishman will be getting a chance to test his true fitness at the Mugello circuit, as his team has set up a day of riding at the track in conjunction with the CIV’s first free practice session.

2011 BMW Motorrad Days pics and video

By Alison

The 2011 BMW Motorrad Days which took place last weekend at Garmisch- Partenkirchen proved again just how well the Germans can do an event like this. Organised by BMW and Husqvarna, more than 30,000 motorcyclists took part in the event, forming an impressive parade across the alps as just one of the many activities of the weekend.

Visitors to the BMW Motorrad Days event came from all over the world, and those travelling the furthest were probably the 19 riders who came from Malaysia. The various events of the festival included an enduro track to test ride BMW and Husqvarna offroad models, and stage enduro competitions with champion riders.

The usual show from Chris Pfeiffer, world stunt champion occurred, and he took his beloved BMW F800R to the town centre as well, and BMW Motorrad riders James Toseland, Lorenzo Zanetti and Sylvain Barrier were present. Topping it all off was James Toseland’s rendition of “It’s a long way to the top if ya wanna rock and roll” by ACDC. Check out all the pics below.

James Toseland bows out of Brno round

By Toni M.

james toseland

It took 15 laps and a 18th spot in this morning’s WSBK free practice at Brno for James Toseland to realize that he isn’t fit enough to race in this weekend’s double header at the Czech circuit.

The BMW Italia rider is hoping to return to full fitness, after missing most of the season due to his wrist injury, for his home race at Silverstone, July 28th to 30th. “Had a run out this morning to get up to speed, unfortunately I have to sit out the rest of the weekend and get fully fit for Silverstone,” posted the Briton on his Facebook page.

Substitute rider Lorenzo Lanzi was already on standby in the event that Toseland couldn’t ride, and will take Toseland’s place in the BMW Italia team for the rest of the weekend.

James Toseland returns for Brno round, but Lanzi is on standby

By Toni M.

james toseland

James Toseland has decided he’ll try to race in this weekend’s World Superbike round at Brno. The Briton has been been battling an extremely serious and career threatening wrist injury that he picked up during testing at Aragon last March.

BMW Motorrad Italia rider tried to return for the Monza round, but had to bow out due to the pain and then at Miller but was only able to ride in race 1 (taking 15th) before his wrist swelled up again and on doctors advice had to sit out both the Misano and Aragon rounds.

Toseland will try to ride on Friday’s free practice and provisional qualifying sessions, however if he should have any problems team manager Serafino Foti has replacement rider Lorenzo Lanzi on standby, just in case.

The former double World Superbike champion while recovering from his hand/wrist injury hasn’t being doing any real training, but was able to pen a deal with Joda Clothing to become their testimonial and last weekend rocked the crowds with his singing at the BMW Motorrad Days at Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Lorenzo Lanzi to sub for James Toseland at Misano and Aragon

By Toni M.

lorenzo lanzi

With James Toseland ruled out of the next two rounds of the World Superbike championship, BMW Motorrad Italia Superbike Team has called on former Superbike rider Lorenzo Lanzi to fill in for him.

Lanzi 29, debuted in World Superbikes in 2005 and has three victories to his name, twice in 2005 and a third in 2008, all on Ducati’s for various teams, his last podium was a second place in 2010 in race 1 at Imola, riding for the now defunct DFX Corse team.

The Italian was unable to find a team this season, so his debut on Toseland’s BMW S1000RR will give him a chance to be seen again and maybe a shot of finding a team to ride for next year.

By Toni M.

james toseland mmp 2011

James Toseland has suffered another setback in recovering from his serious wrist injury that he sustained in a testing accident at Aragon last March, because he has been ruled out from both this weekend’s World Superbike round at Misano Adriatico and the following week’s round at Motorland Aragon in Spain

After taking part in race 1 at Miller Motorsports Park and garnering one point, he elected to sit out of race two because of pain and swelling to his wrist, and following a further check-up, his doctors have advised him to avoid any racing efforts for the next four weeks.

“Just been to see the doctor today as my wrist started to hurt again after Salt Lake,”
posted Toseland on his Facebook page. “I’ve been told not to race for the next four weeks - gutted is an understatement, but I’m determined to make a come back in Brno.”

James Toseland breaks wrist at Aragon test, undergoes surgery, out for 6 weeks

By Toni M.

james toseland

The upcoming WSBK round at Donington Park and the following one at Assen will be one rider short, because BMW Italia’s rider James Toseland broke his right wrist during private testing at the Motorland Aragon circuit

The English rider crashed on the second day of testing, picking up a small fracture according to X-rays taken in Spain, but the damage was much worse than expected, and Toseland had to undergo emergency surgery in Manchester and have wires inserted and it will be at least six weeks before they can be removed.

“My main priority was being fit enough to race at Donington,” said Toseland “so I was really pleased when I was told in Spain that I would be ok. But when I got back to the hotel, the pain in my right wrist was unbelievable and, considering that I had a race coming up in a week’s time, I sent the scan on to a specialist I know in Manchester.
