James Toseland is going to try to return to World Superbike action for the fourth round of the season at Monza.
The BMW Italia rider seriously injured his right hand after highsiding while testing his S1000RR at the Aragon circuit in Spain, missing two rounds of the championship following his surgery to fix the displaced lunar bone and restore the blood supply to his hand.
With the pins removed from his hand just last week and Toseland is determined to give it a try and see if he can actually ride at the Italian Temple of Speed.

The upcoming WSBK round at Donington Park and the following one at Assen will be one rider short, because BMW Italia’s rider James Toseland broke his right wrist during private testing at the Motorland Aragon circuit
The English rider crashed on the second day of testing, picking up a small fracture according to X-rays taken in Spain, but the damage was much worse than expected, and Toseland had to undergo emergency surgery in Manchester and have wires inserted and it will be at least six weeks before they can be removed.
“My main priority was being fit enough to race at Donington,” said Toseland “so I was really pleased when I was told in Spain that I would be ok. But when I got back to the hotel, the pain in my right wrist was unbelievable and, considering that I had a race coming up in a week’s time, I sent the scan on to a specialist I know in Manchester.

As we promised here are more pics, this time official, from yesterday’s BMW Motorrad Italia team launch that took place at the Monza race track.
The team will have factory technical support as confirmed by Bernhard Godmayer, Head of BMW Motorrad Motorsport, “Now we can count on two teams, and we want to establish an excellent relationship between them, allowing for a constant exchange of data.”
While former World Superbike Champion James Toseland, who will much need to revive his career after last year’s debacle on the Sterilgarda Yamaha, said about the previous test, “The first outing was useful only as a shakedown, and to understand which setup direction to move in.”
Ayrton Badovini who gave BMW Italia the 2010 Superstock title and is switching back to Superbikes this year after a stint in 2008 said, “I know how important this opportunity is, and I don’t want to waste it. I have raced in this category before, and I know how much it counts to have a good bike and a good team. From this point of view I’m very confident.”

Our colleagues over at Motoblog.it are currently on hand for the official presentation to the press of World Superbike Championship’s new entry, BMW Motorrad Italia.
Unfortunately for the guys covering the press conference, it’s not taking place at fancy hotel or big named restaurant, with no half naked chicks or a leather clad Paris Hilton around, and no champagne or ice sculptures, but at the very serious and legendary Autodromo Nazionale di Monza.
The newbie Italian Superbike team will be fielding James Toseland and 2010 Superstock champion Ayrton Badovini, while the winning Superstock team will have Lorenzo Zanetti (7th last year in the STK standings on Ducati 1098R) and Sylvain Barrier (6th with Team Garnier Junior Racing on the S1000RR).
Check back with us later today or tomorrow for more pics and interviews.

World Superbike newcomer BMW Motorrad Italia Team, with James Toseland and Ayrton Badovini got their first ride in a private two day test at Portimao, on their official BMW S1000RR’s which the Italian team only finished building last week. The team used BMW’s test bikes at the previous tests at Portimao earlier this month.
The first day of testing was only a taste, as the usual bad weather once again hampered, at least in the morning session that the riders had to sit out, while in the afternoon session on a drying track, both riders got in about 20 laps, each trying to find a basic set-up.
Today’s session was concentrated on weight distribution and suspension settings and electronic mapping and the team is now headed back to Italy to study the data gathered and will return to Portimao in January, while the official BMW team will be at Eastern Creek, Australia for more testing and hoping for better weather than has been in Europe of late.

In a not so distant past, riders got fit their own way. In one hand, they held a bottle that didn’t have water or an energy drink in it, and in the other a cigarette and some good looking babes hanging on to their arms. While former Superbike bad boy, Marco Lucchinelli likes to tell that on the eve of a race, he stayed up all night rockin’ at a Van Halen concert and the next day he won, but nowadays racing and fitness go hand and hand, and it’s very serious and scientific business.
So it’s not surprising that Troy Corser, Leon Haslam, James Toseland and Aryton Badovini find themselves at BMW’s fitness camp for a week of intense physical and psychological sports training, and diets (hope they won’t turn into lightweights like Nicky Hayden has become) and get this, they also have to take German language lessons, so they can learn to say chassis and some other highly technical term.
“Basically, we are looking for a complete fitness training”, said team doctor Dr. Vincenzo Tota, who guides the BMW fitness camp. “So, for example, we are doing some mountain biking as an aerobic training, or climbing as an exercise for specific muscles. While climbing, you use calves and forearms, like you do on the bike. And you also train your balance. With the weight lifting, we increase the power of the muscles. But in order to also improve stamina and resistance, we do not go for big weights, but for a lot of repetitions with small weights.”
James Toseland himself told fans that he would be racing for BMW Motorrad Italia during a charity dinner last Saturday and less than a week later BMW Motorrad has confirmed both the new debuting Superbike team, and that Toseland and 2010 Superstock 1000 champion Ayrton Badovini will be their two riders.
Compared to this year’s privateer team Reitwagen BMW that literally disappered from the championship just four rounds, BMW Italia will receive technical support from the official BMW Motorrad Motorsport factory team, running Troy Corser and Leon Haslam.
Official press release after the jump.

The other day James Toseland and his manager Roger Burnett were spotted heading into the BMW Italia headquarters at San Donato Milanese, to conclude the deal that would see the Briton ride for the new BMW satellite World Superbike team.
Toseland lost his ride in Yamaha Sterilgarda after a disappointing return to the Superbike series, after spending two seasons in MotoGP and finished only 9th in the championship.
During the David Jefferies awards that took place Saturday evening, where the piano playing and singing rider confirmed that he will fielded in the Italian team with Superstock champion Aryton Badovini, who completed dominated his championship winning nine out the ten races with the BMW S1000RR, will be his team mate.
“We have been talking about this for some time but obviously couldn’t say anything about. I am delighted and we start testing next month.” said Toseland.
The privateer team is expected to test at Jerez with the official BMW team.

James Toseland may be out of the Yamaha Sterilgarda after his disappointing season, with rumors have him heading to his former Ten Kate Honda team, but this hasn’t stopped Yamaha from dedicating a special and limited edition of James Toseland-replica guitars from its musical instrument division.
Only 52 RGX-A2 JT guitars will be made, bearing Toseland’s #52 racing number and the Yamaha Sterilgarda livery colors of which one will go to the piano playing British rider and four will be used as competition prizes.

James Toseland lost his third his third place in Superpole qualifying session at Nurburgring after leaving the pitlane for Superpole 3 before the session had been officially started. The Yamaha Sterilgarda rider left the pitlane ten seconds before the green light and has been penalized five grid positions and will take off in both races from the second row in eighth.
“I’ve really enjoyed riding around the Nurburgring, it’s pretty new to me as I’ve not been here for eleven years. Unfortunately I exited the pit lane apparently on a red light, I didn’t do that intentionally but I’ve been penalised so my third position grid start has been taken away and I’ve been put back to eighth on the second row of the grid” said Toseland. “The first two rows are really important here because the first corner is very tight. I’m obviously disappointed about that but the officials have taken that stance, I can’t really argue with it I just have to comply, that’s the rules. I’m still looking forward to two good races tomorrow.”

Max Biaggi took his second Superpole of the season after a crash in this morning’s Q2 session left him with bruises on his hand. The Roman Emperor set down a blazing lap of 1′54.595 at the Nurburgring circuit that was more than enough to leave an ultra competitive Carlos Checa in second and just 0.026s from the top spot.
Biaggi needs just 40 points more than Leon Haslam in tomorrow’s races to win the World Superbike Championship with two rounds to go.
The third spot went to James Toseland who was able to out qualify his team mate Cal Crutchlow, who is this year’s Superpole specialist, but the Brit couldn’t get past the second stint and will take off on the starting grid in 10th behind Michel Fabrizio. It seems that Toseland will be out of a ride at the end of the season, with Marco Melandri to take his place (read separate story).

Hot from a third place podium at the Suzuka 8 Hours last Sunday, Jonathan Rea took the top spot in today’s free practice at the Silverstone circuit. The Ten Kate Honda rider put in a best lap of 1′06.927 in the final minutes of session and was the only rider to break the 2.07 mark beating out fellow Brit James Toseland in second by a mere 0.077s.
All seven regular British riders were in the top ten in this first session on the new revised Silverstone track. The third spot went to Leon Haslam followed by Sterilgarda Yamaha rider Cal Crutchlow, who was separated from Haslam by less than a tenth of a second.
Fifth went to Troy Corser who is fully recovered after his crash at Brno that kept him out of both races. The Ducati Althea Racing duo Shane Byrne and Carlos Checa were sixth and seventh and Aprilia Alitalia’s Leon Camier took eighth. The ninth spot went to Kawasaki’s Tom Sykes followed by Noriyuki Haga who closed out the top ten.
Current points leader Max Biaggi was only 18th, but he is rarely in the top spots in the first free practice. Honda HM Plant’s wild card riders Joshua Brookes and Ryuichi Kiyonari (who won the Suzuka 8 Hours) were only 15th and 21st. Tommy Bridewell who is also wildcarding with the Tyco Racing Honda team took 23rd, while Chris Vermeulen’s replacement rider Akira Yanagawa was last.
