Dorna has officially confirmed the 2012 Jerez GP. The popular venue was in doubt due to its now well known financial problems, however the city of Jerez has come through with the €4 million euros that Dorna wanted to host the event.
“We are delighted to confirm that the 2012 Grand Prix of Spain will be held at the Circuito de Jerez, a very special locale for the MotoGP World Championship.” said Dorna’s CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta. “I’d like to thank the Junta de Andalucía and Jerez de la Frontera City Council for their support in working toward securing this iconic event. We’ll now look ahead to the future of the event and focus on working together to reach an agreement up until 2016.”
The Estoril and Sachsenring rounds who were still indicated on the recently revised 2012 MotoGP calendar as ’subject to contract’ have yet to be officially confirmed by Dorna.

The 2012 Jerez GP was saved at the last minute thanks to the town’s mayor José Maria Garcia Pelayo, but the Jerez circuit director and president of the RFME, Juan Alvarez has some doubts whether they’ll be able to host the event after 2012.
Speaking on Canal Sur Radio during the program “El Circuito,” Alvarez explained the problems that arose during the negotiations for the 2012 GP between Cirjesa, who owns and manages the circuit until December 31st and confirmed by Dorna’s Carmelo Ezpeleta, but Alvarez said he’s not sure if the contract has been signed, but assures that whatever Ezpeleta says “that is law“.
However regarding the fact whether the GP will be held in 2013 (despite previous statements that it will be on the calendar until 2016) Alvarez has doubts: “Unfortunately I am beginning to imagine a MotoGP championship without Jerez on the calendar. I spend a lot of time trying to organize a great race, but if Jerez doesn’t not have the conditions to host it the organizer has every right to go elsewhere, where they are treated better and have no trouble collecting so unfortunately we may have to start thinking about a calendar without Jerez on it, which would be sad for the fans and for the area, and if the GP is dropped many other things may collapse. “
Alvarez concluded by saying: “I am optimistic by nature, but the facts are making me think that the situation is getting bad,” and is thinking that possible sale could be a solution, adding, “The Jerez circuit isn’t worth anything without a Grand Prix.”

The Jerez GP scheduled for April 29th, 2012 is now officially on, as advance tickets for the event are now on sale.
Following last week’s rumors that the round was once again in doubt due to the massive financial problems that the circuit is having, (they’re 45 million euros in debt) and the fact that tickets had yet to be sold, but the town’s mayor José Maria Garcia Pelayo assured racing fans that the highly popular event is on: “The Jerez Grand Prix will be regularly hosted in 2012. We are working on organizing the event without relying on help from private companies, but I can officially confirm that 2012 GP is not at risk. “
Apparently the town has also found the sanction fees to pay Dorna and the contract to host the event at Jerez de la Frontera has finally been signed.
