Memory Lane 1988: Hakan Carlqvist Stops for a Beer

By Toni M.

This is for you youngsters out there. Pure vintage from the 1988 Belgium GP at Namur, when Swedish motocross racer Hakan ‘Carla’ Carlqvist had such a big advantage over the other riders that he had time to stop for a beer before crossing the finish line.

This was Carlqvist’s last race before retiring from the international motocross scene and was one of the coolest things ever seen.

Valentino Rossi Organizes Motocross Charity Event

By Toni M.

rossi podium sepang

If you’re going to be in Italy around the Pesaro area the 15th of November, why not take in a star studded motocross race at the Cavallara track?

Valentino Rossi is organizing this special motocross race as a fund raising event for children with leukemia, a repeat of the same race that was organized by Rossi’s dad, Graziano back in 1979, the year Valentino was born.

The super star rider has invited numerous MotoGP, World Superbike and Motocross riders to take part and so far we know that Marco Melandri, Andrea Dovizioso and Marco Simoncelli have accepted the invitation, but they’ll be other big named riders.

It’ll be a great chance to see up close how these riders that usually are so fast on a race track, fare on motocross bikes on a dirt track. Most MotoGP riders include motocrossing as part of their personal training.

The Cavallara track is FMI and UISP homologated and located at Mondavio in the province of Pesaro and Urbino, 30 km from the town of Pesaro and you can even do a little sightseeing and take in the beautiful medieval castle built in 1482.

Red Bull X-Fighters Recharges Battersea Power Station

A surge of energy will bring Battersea Power Station to life on 22 August 2009 as the dramatic setting is transformed to play host to the Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour finale. Twelve of the world’s best Freestyle Motocross (FMX) riders will descend on the British capital to thrill a 17,000-strong crowd as they perform gravity-defying tricks to battle it out for the world title in front of the famous white chimneys.

A double first: not only is it the first time Red Bull X-Fighters has touched down in the UK, it’s also the first time that both the inside and outside of Battersea Power Station will be used as part of the set to entertain the general public.

Red Bull X-Fighters is a high-energy spectacle in which riders on motorbikes combine power, skill, showmanship and bravery to excite fans. The World Tour has garnered a huge international following since its conception in 2001 with jumps and tricks getting harder, higher and longer every year – often reaching heights of 40 feet.

In 2008, 170,000 spectators saw the Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour climb to new heights with spectacular contests in the bull fighting arenas of Mexico City and Madrid, the stone quarry of Wuppertal in Germany, the Sambadrome parade ground in Rio de Janeiro, a rodeo arena in Texas and a gigantic historic stadium in Warsaw – which was brought back to life for a day before it was then taken down by the wrecking ball.

The 2009 calendar is no less impressive and before making its debut in London, the series will have already touched down in Mexico City (Mexico), Calgary (Canada), Fort Worth (Texas, USA) and Madrid (Spain).

Sally Chatterjee, Interim Chief Executive, Visit London says: “Red Bull has a history of creating innovative and highly entertaining events that make the most of London’s unique landscape. As such I’m delighted Red Bull X-Fighters has chosen the iconic Battersea Power Station to host the final of its World Tour. The Power Station is a spectacular urban venue and will serve as an incredible backdrop for thousands of people to enjoy such a dynamic show.”

Tickets will be on sale from 1st June and range between £20-45, for more information visit www.redbullxfighters.com and for information on accommodation, restaurants and other activities for a London stay, visit event partner www.visitlondon.com

By Alison

In these two videos we can see Marco Melandri in his motocross training regime, and indulging in an added passion of go-karting with his friends. While Noriyuki Haga prefers to work out in the bedroom, Melandri has a more conventional fitness routine. Two wheeling with a twist: Segway supercross from James Stewart

By Alison

Segway Supercross!

In this video we see James “Bubba” Stewart ride a Segway around a motocross track. While the answer to the question “can you ride a Segway around a supercross track?” would be an emphatic “no” from me, James Stewart proves he can. While we were never in any doubt as to his motocross capabilities, we weren’t expecting this.

This is not as heart-in-your-mouth as other supercross moments, and while Stewart says “anybody can do this” his advice to children is not to try this at home. You even get on-board commentary in this video, so check it out.
