More rider quotes from the Brno GP

By Toni M.

motogp brno

After the Yamaha factory duo and the all Honda podium here’s what the rest of the riders had to say after the Brno GP including those who didn’t finish the race in front of the 155,400 fans who showed up to take in a great and exciting day of Grand Prix racing.

Valentino Rossi - 6th

“I’d say we can be pretty pleased, as we took a step forward. I must say that Filippo and Ducati has been intelligent, because just with some small changes, we were able to get a good result, improving in both wet and dry conditions and in both qualifying and the race. Now I’m able to ride the bike better under braking and on corner entry, and I can use the front tyre better. We started with the goal of fighting with the group ahead of us, but unfortunately we made a small mistake with the start procedure for heating the tyres and the first two laps were difficult, without enough grip. It’s a lesson that we’ll remember next time. I didn’t have a great start like I did at Laguna, for example. That would have helped a lot, because from the third lap to the finish, I had the same pace as the two Yamahas, and even ‘Sic’ wasn’t so far ahead. It’s sixth place, but it’s a sixth place that’s much more important than our other results. The gap is much smaller, although I backed off in the final laps since there was nothing else I could do. Otherwise, I would’ve been just ten seconds from Stoner and much less than that from the podium. Now we must focus and take another step. We’ll try the 800 tomorrow, and it will be a very important test for confirming other new details and for continuing work on the setup. We’ll probably take a couple of final runs with the GP11, but we’ll definitely be continuing with the GP11.1. Finally, I’d like to compliment ‘Sic’ for a podium that he really deserved, for today’s race but also for what he has shown this season.”

Casey Stoner surprised at victory, small changes help Dovizioso, Simoncelli finally takes a podium

By Toni M.

Stoner. Dovizioso, Simoncelli Brno 2011

HRC Vice President Shuhei Nakamoto got his wish today at the Brno GP. The Japanese boss fulfilled his dream of an all Honda podium much sooner than he expected, with Casey Stoner taking a dominating win, his sixth of the season and lengthening his lead in the championship over Jorge Lorenzo. Andrea Dovizioso took his fifth podium of the year and Marco Simoncelli finally made it to the podium after binning his RC121V so many times.

These two Italians are are still unsure of their fates next season and whether Honda will still support them with factory bikes as the Japanese manufacturer is still finalizing its 2012 budget; Dovizioso seems headed to Cecchinello’s LCR Honda team if they can find the funds and Simoncelli on Ducati’s radar, but the lanky Gresini rider would like to stay put where he is now.

“We knew we could make a strong podium challenge today but we didn’t really expect the race win,” reported a satisfied Casey Stoner. “As soon as the race got underway I was having a good battle with Andrea but this cost me a little time and I was afraid that Jorge and Dani would stretch away from me but when I got past I found I had plenty of speed to catch up and the bike felt great. I passed Jorge and then Dani sadly crashed out so I pushed to see if I could pull a gap and I was able to do so quite quickly, then from this point it was a matter of managing the race. I’m very sorry for Dani, he would have been hard to beat today. After such a hard weekend it’s fantastic to come out with a comfortable win, a big thanks to my team who never give up, they always support me so a huge thanks to them. Tomorrow we’ll be back on the 1000 for another day of testing, so I hope the weather stays dry for us!”.

Wrong tire choice leaves Jorge Lorenzo 4th, Ben Spies grits teeth to finish 5th

By Toni M.

MotoGP Brno 2011 Yamaha factory

When commentators announced ahead of the race that Jorge Lorenzo and Alvaro Bautista were the only two riders to have opted for a softer front tire, we thought that Lorenzo had found a way to improve the gap that separated him from Dani Pedrosa who dominated at Brno throughout the practice and qualifying sessions at Brno, however three laps into the race it was obvious that the tire had been the wrong choice as Yamaha rider admitted, because he had a couple of big moments and then faded from first to find himself fourth on lap 12.

“The front tyre we chose was not the best option today,” said reigning World champion Jorge Lorenzo. “We tried it in qualifying and yesterday morning and it gave me a really good feeling and very constant pace. Today with the different conditions and temperature it was not working. From the beginning of the second lap I was really close to losing my front in every corner so it was difficult to improve on fourth position. The Championship is now even more difficult for us but that doesn’t mean it is finished. There are still a lot of points to be played for so we must focus on winning the most races we can. Now we must forget this race which is probably one of the worst this season and possibly in my MotoGP career, I am excited to try the 1000 bike and improvements to the current 800 engine tomorrow as well!”

Ben Spies who has been suffering from a very painful pinched nerve in his neck since his arrival in Brno, didn’t think he could manage to last the entire 22 laps instead took a very respectful 5th place.

“That was a hard race; I wanted to quit every lap past the ninth! I tried as hard as I could and didn’t make too many mistakes. I just thought with Valentino coming behind me and being ahead in the Championship I’ve just got to keep on going until I fall of this thing. I didn’t fall off and I finished so it was a good result. Now it’s the complete opposite, it’s my right arm that’s completely dead because that’s all that was working in the race. Again I’ve got to thank the team; the bike was really good and definitely a podium bike. I’ve also got to thank the Clinica guys; I’ve never been in there so much, every day! That was the hardest physical race I’ve ever done. We got it finished, put it behind us and we scored some points.”
said the American rider.

Valentino Rossi admits he's afraid of going to Motegi

By Toni M.

valentino rossi brno 2011

Valentino Rossi came clean on his opinion on racing at Motegi, however without confirming whether he and his Ducati team will be going to Japan in October.

The Italian who after the Safety Commission meeting on Friday afternoon where only ten riders showed up, stated ominously that several riders have been threatened into changing their minds on the Japanese GP. It seems that Dorna is intentioned on laying sanctions on those teams if they don’t show up and those riders and paddock personnel with contracts that expire at the end of season having been bearing the pressure on going to Japan or else.

The Ducati rider who took sixth in today’s race at Brno in a post-race interview with Sportmediaset declared that “me and my team are afraid of going to Japan” also stating that he doesn’t believe it to be “very intelligent to race near a place where a nuclear reactor is completely out of control and in a highly seismic area where another earthquake could ruin everything and everyone” and believes it’s “stupid to go there just for a motorcycle race,” doubly confirming “I’m afraid of going, everyone who works with me and my team is afraid, I don’t know what the others will do, but I don’t think it’s a good idea. All the paddock is afraid and some are being forced to go to place where the situation is very risky.”

Yamaha’s Tech3 team was the first to announce that they will be racing at Motegi, if the current situation remains the same, while Jorge Lorenzo who had been adamant from the start on not going, became buddy buddies with Casey Stoner after the Australian declared he wouldn’t be going an has now lost his ally when the Repsol Honda rider softened his stance on the idea after revealing that his previous position was based on learning that his wife Adriana was pregnant.

Casey Stoner dominates Brno GP in all Honda podium

By Toni M.

casey stoner brno 2011

Casey Stoner who was blatantly uhappy with his Honda this Brno weekend turned everything around, to take a very dominating and very solitary win, his 6th of the season today at the Czech circuit while heading the first Honda clean podium sweep since Laguna Seca in 2006.

The Australian inherited the lead from Dani Pedrosa on lap 3 when his team mate slid out of the race out just a few seconds after taking the top spot from Jorge Lorenzo. The Yamaha rider made the worst tatical error of the season, gambling on a soft front tire, that not only gave him several big moments, but also conditioned his entire race and left him only fourth at the finish line and loosing 12 precious points from Stoner who now has 32 points over Lorenzo.

Andrea Dovizioso battled it out with fellow countryman Marco Simoncelli, for the second spot on the podium but the more experienced rider got the second place trophy, while Simoncelli kept his head and settled down for third and finally broke that duck that kept him from that elusive first podium.

MotoGP Brno: Dani Pedrosa dominates in warm-up practice

By Toni M.

dani pedrosa brno 2011

Beautiful sunny weather met the MotoGP riders for this morning’s warm-up practice at Brno and with a little more rubber laid down on the Czech track and the final chance for some fine tuning to set-ups saw the 20 minute session go to Dani Pedrosa, who once again killed the field.

The Repsol Honda rider was only one to break the 1.57 mark with his 1.56.675 leaving Jorge Lorenzo in second and a shy less than seven tenths adrift. Ben Spies was third with Marco Simoncelli right on tail of the Yamaha rider.

A very unsatisfied looking Casey Stoner was fifth and the last rider to be within a second of Pedrosa with his 0.909 difference. Andrea Dovizioso was 6th followed by Alvaro Bautista who made a big jump forward after his 14th place in yesterday’s qualifying.

Closing out the top ten were Cal Crutchlow, Nicky Hayden and Colin Edwards, while Valentino Rossi was only 11th and almost 1.8 seconds off pace and evidently that change in riding position didn’t work as well this morning.

MotoGP riders recap Brno Qualifying

By Toni M.

MotoGP Brno 2011

Unless the weather throws a wrench in tomorrow’s round at the Automotodrom Brno, it should be a three horse, erm, rider race. Dani Pedrosa, Jorge Lorenzo and Casey Stoner all should be on the podium, but the order will be up to these three guys.

Lorenzo has found the pace he was looking for and Stoner, despite the fact is that he’s always unhappy with his set-up will come out fighting once the lights go out, and remembering the outcome of Laguna Seca GP.

Here’s what the MotoGP riders had to say after today’s qualifying session.

Dani Pedrosa - 1st

“It’s my first pole of the year and also after a long time, so I’m very happy for that. The weekend has been pretty good for us so far, the bike is working well and I’m feeling good physically as well. We made only a few small changes on the bike and this allowed me to concentrate more on my riding, so let’s hope we are able to keep the pace tomorrow and fight for a good result. This is the most important thing and we need to keep our feet on the ground because the rivals are close. I think we can still improve the bike a little, especially on the chassis side to have better grip, even though I guess that the rain this morning affected the conditions on track which made it more slippery”.

Dani Pedrosa confirms Brno domination with pole position

By Toni M.

dani pedrosa

Dani Pedrosa confirmed his absolute feeling with the Brno circuit this year by taking the pole position in a highly fought out qualifying session.

The Repsol Honda rider grabbed his first pole position of the season fending off both Jorge Lorenzo and Casey Stoner, who will be the other two riders joining him on the front row. Pedrosa’s pole position lap was a superfast 1’56.591 (his fastest second is the fourth), but he was unable to match the blistering 1′56.328 he set in yesterday’s morning session.

No doubt Lorenzo and Stoner (who had a big moment and managed to save himself from a highside) will be slightly happier today than they were at the end of Friday afternoon as they ended up adrift from the pole position by just 0.113s and 0.269s respectively, but Lorenzo seemingly having a better pace than the Australian.

John Hopkins sustains injury, ruled out of Brno GP

By Toni M.

john hopkins

John Hopkins MotoGP weekend at Brno has been cut short after a crash in this morning’s wet FP3, that left the Rizla Suzuki wild card rider with a break and dislocation to his third finger and a dislocation to his second finger in his right hand.

Hopkins tweeted that he’ll after have to undergo surgery to correct the problem, “Brno weekend is over w/ surgery needed on my right hand ! I am very sorry to the team and all fans for having such a stupid crash!!”

“This morning’s injury is a huge disappointment to all of us at Rizla Suzuki and of course mostly to John,” said team manager Paul Denning. “He is completely devastated that he is not able to compete in the Grand Prix tomorrow, especially as his form yesterday was extremely promising. He was just building up to speed very gradually in the wet conditions and, on the first lap that he tried to push a little bit harder, he made a simple mistake and folded the front. It was on exactly the same corner that Casey had done the same thing at the start of the session, but John was just less lucky and as he entered the gravel trap the angle of his hand meant that the impact folded his fingers. This caused a substantial break to one finger and further damage to another. If the injury had been his left hand he would be on the GSV-R this afternoon, but to control a MotoGP bike and expect to be competitive with that injury to his throttle and braking hand is completely unrealistic.”
