Yamaha riders talk about their Indianpolis race

By Toni M.

Yamaha riders Indianapolis 2011

We were expecting to see Ben Spies on the Indianapolis podium after his strong practice sessions, but he got bottled up and pushed back and ended up having to ride through the pack to make up for the lost time, it was also nice to see that Yamaha hadn’t given any team orders (anyone happen to remember what went down in Yamaha after the 2010 Motegi race?) to the American regarding him passing his team mate.

Jorge Lorenzo’s race was more of an uphill struggle, unable to find anything good in the asphalt and in his front tires, leaving him with another major setback in trying to keep his title. He was so desperate to turn his weekend around that he admitted that even tried Colin Edwards and Ben Spies’ settings and final decided to use his team mate settings in the race, but his tires dropped off after the seventh lap and when he returned to his garage his Bridgestones were completely shot compared to Spies.

Ben Spies - 3rd

“My actual start wasn’t too bad, just a couple of people got into turn one too hot and I got bottled in. I think Dovi came across in front of me in turn four and I was just glad to stay on the bike. I never even saw him. After that happened we just had to pluck away and not get ahead of ourselves. We rode well but just needed to be up there in the first four turns. I rode as fast as I could; it was tough to pass out there as we couldn’t get it done on the straight so we had to figure out some different spots. I was happy to be able to do that and still run good pace at the end.”

Images from the Red Bull Indianapolis GP weekend

By Toni M.

MotoGP 2011 gallery di Indianapolis

We’ve got a massive 119 images from this weekend’s MotoGP race at Indianapolis that was characterized by a number of complaints regarding the newly asphalted circuit and the excessive graining on both Bridgestone and Dunlop (125cc and Moto2) tires, but in spite of these inconveniences, all together it was excellent and very profitable day for Casey Stoner, Marc Marquez and Nico Terol.

Enjoy the pics.

Casey Stoner and the other Repsol Honda riders on the Indianapolis GP

By Toni M.

casey stoner indy 2011

They say it ain’t over till it’s over, but if Casey Stoner continues in this devasting manner and taking his 7th win of the season (11 podiums in 12 races and his worst result was a DNF caused by Rossi ) of the 2011 season at Indianapolis, Jorge Lorenzo will have to pack in his #JL a lot sooner than anyone expected.

The Australian despite his usual ‘complaints’ (he’s never satisfied) has virtually been uncontested in these last three races as soon as he gets out front and is now on a winning spree and stronger than ever.

Here’s what all three Repsol Honda riders had to say after the race:

Casey Stoner - 1st
“We got an ok start and I should have been a little more aggressive in the first corner. As I entered turn two Dani hit the breaks quite hard and I just had nothing, my brakes weren’t warmed up yet and I had trouble stopping, I was lucky to get through the first lap.

The race was tough, conditions were very hot and the track surface a little more slippery than practice and qualifying which made things difficult to know how much to push. At one point I closed the front and dropped the bike on my knee, I was pretty much down but managed to pick it back up and not lose too much confidence. From there we started to make our way past Dani, put in a few good lap times and pull an advantage.

Under challenging track conditions everything has worked really well this weekend, the crew did a fantastic job and gave me a great bike so a huge thanks to them all!”.

Ducati debacle at Indianapolis GP

By Toni M.

Ducati riders at Indianapolis 2011

The Indianapolis GP race proved to be Ducati’s Caporetto for both the factory and satellite teams.

Wrong set-ups played havoc on the front tires (both the harder and softer choices) on the abrasive asphalt, gearbox problems, an over enthusiastic last lap last corner pass left all the Ducati riders except Randy de Puniet, wishing to get out of Indy as soon as possible and put the nightmarish weekend behind them

Here’s what all the Ducati riders had to say:

Randy De Puniet – 8th in race

“I’m happy, this is my best race of the season! Bad start for the race when Loris touched me and I lost at least three positions, otherwise I could stay with the group and probably I could have fought for better positions. But it’s ok, our pace, as I declared yesterday, has been steady and good until the end and this allowed me to overtake many riders in the second half of the race. I’m satisfied with how things went today, the team has worked very well and after a difficult start of the season we all deserve a good result. We needed it and I look forward to continue at this level also next week at Misano.”

Unstoppable Casey Stoner wins Indianapolis GP

By Toni M.

casey stoner indianapolis 2011

Casey Stoner continued his domination of the Indianapolis circuit take another fabulous victory and his third consecutive win and his seventh of the season and increase his hold on the championship by 44 points.

Despite being the pole sitter, it was team mate Dani Pedrosa got his usual impressive holeshot followed by Jorge Lorenzo while Stoner dropped to third after running wide. But it didn’t take the Australian very long to regroup and pass Lorenzo on the straight at the end of lap 2 and the hunt down his Repsol Honda team mate and overtake him on lap 7 and from there it was clear sailing for Stoner, who took his first ever win at Indianapolis with a 4.828s advantage over Dani Pedrosa who rode to a lonely second place.

Ben Spies looked like the only rider who could stay with Stoner during this weekend, had a horrible start. He was shoved wide by an aggressive Andrea Dovizioso and dropped down to ninth and he had to begin his long remount to third place, passing first Colin Edwards and Alvaro Bautista and then Nicky Hayden who made the wrong front tire choice and visibly started to fade.

Ben Spies on top in warm-up practice at Indianapolis

By Toni M.

ben spies

MotoGP warm-up practice this morning with slighty cooler weather at Indianpolis, produced much tighter lap times, with Ben Spies taking the top of the timesheets with a best lap of 1.39.621, which left Dani Pedrosa, yesterday’s poleman and favourite to win this afternoon’s race Casey Stoner, and Jorge Lorenzo in a little more than one and half tenths adrift.

Nicky Hayden was the surprise, because he was fifth and because he was the first Ducati rider to break the 1.40 mark all weekend, infact he slipped in a 1.39.988 which was just 0.367s from fellow countryman Ben Spies.

Marco Simoncelli and Andrea Dovizioso who are still in the Honda renewal contract phase were 6th and 7th respectively while Colin Edwards took eighth followed by Hector Barbera and Valentino Rossi.

Rossi is still struggling after his apparently innocuous crash from yesterday, as he was barely one tenth faster that his 14th place qualifying time.

MotoGP riders review qualifying at Indianapolis

By Toni M.

casey stoner indianapolis 2011

The asphalt and Bridgestone’s tire management especially with the graining on the front tire and not going off the racing line will be the name of the game in today’s MotoGP race at Indianapolis if anyone wants to stay even close to pole man Casey Stoner.

Here’s what all the rider’s had to say after yesterday’s impressive qualifying session.

Casey Stoner - 1st

“I’m very happy with Pole here in Indy, the team have been doing a great job under difficult conditions this weekend, but the race is tomorrow and we will keep working right up until the last moment to try and get the set up right. Obviously without the bumps from previous years the track is performing a lot better, but the lack of consistency in the grip levels are causing issues, everyone is loosing the front and it doesn’t give you a lot of confidence, when you hit these patches the bike just seems to drop away from you. We haven’t changed too much since FP1, just a few small steps and trying to get the front tyre to work more as with such little grip, we are destroying it. For race distance we’re looking pretty good, we did more than race distance on soft front and soft rear and had good stability, we’ll wait and see what the conditions are like for tomorrow and decide from there”.

Casey Stoner dominates qualifying at Indianapolis

By Toni M.

casey stoner indy 2011

Casey Stoner completely dominated today’s qualifying session at Indianapolis. The Repsol Honda rider blitzed the field with several flying laps, but it was an extraordinary 1.38.85o lap (0.688s faster than his morning record lap) in the final minutes that let him take his 7th pole position of this season and the 29th of his career.

Ben Spies will take off on the front row in second and he was a big 0.523s adrift from the Australian, while Yamaha team mate Jorge Lorenzo who has struggled all weekend long grabbed the third spot on the grid bumping Dani Pedrosa into fourth. Pedrosa was a little more second slower than his Repsol Honda team mate.

Andrea Dovizioso on the third Repsol Honda took fifth, while Colin Edwards was sixth and just a little more than a tenth slower that the two Honda factory riders.

Casey Stoner sets pace in FP3 at Indianapolis

By Toni M.

casey stoner indy 2011

Casey Stoner may not like the Indianapolis track, but that didn’t stop him from breaking Dani Pedrosa’s 2009 record with a flying lap of 1.39.538 done at the halfway mark of the 45 minute session which remained untouchable for the rest of the field.

Only two other riders able to break the 1.40 barrier and that was Ben Spies who just 0.132s from the Australian with Dani Pedrosa taking the third spot. Spies with his Yamaha M1 was the only rider that was able to insert himself in a Honda top five domination as Gresini Honda’s Marco Simoncelli and Repsol Honda’s Andrea Dovizioso were fourth and fifth respectively.

Colin Edwards was sixth with his satellite Yamaha, while reigning World Champion Jorge Lorenzo on his factory M1 continued to struggle and managed only a seventh spot and was a full second off pace.

Video: Casey Stoner vs furry animal at Indianapolis

By Toni M.

Only Casey Stoner’s excellent reflexes stopped him from running over this furry little animal that crossed in front of him during the second free practice at Indianapolis.

The animal has been described as being a gopher, a groundhog, a beaver or an otter, can any wildlife animal lover out there confirm what species this is?
