MotoGP Qatar test: Honda riders continue pre-season domination

By Toni M.

dani pedrosa losail day 1

Dani Pedrosa kept up his Sepang MotoGP pre-season testing form at Qatar yesterday evening, setting the fastest time just ahead of team mate Casey Stoner with Hiroshi Aoyama in third, with thoughts going to the tremendous situation in Japan.

“It was a positive first day of practice. We didn’t test anything in special, because our priority today was checking that the bike was also working well here in Qatar, a very different circuit than Sepang, where we did the main winter testing,
” reported the leader of the field, Dani Pedrosa. “We basically worked on the set-up of the bike, to adapt it for this layout and conditions, and tomorrow we will continue working on mappings and a front fork. It seems like the laptimes are closer here than in Sepang, and I’m sure that the times will improve for all because at this track the surface is quite dirty at the beginning, so we will see tomorrow and I hope to make another step forward and close the winter test in a good shape. I’d also like to say I’m very sorry about what happened in Japan. My Japanese mechanics and engineers were explaining the situation there and it’s very moving”.

“Everything has gone well with the bike and in general we don’t have a whole lot to test here, we’re just trying to get more out of the balance of the bike - both bikes have the same chassis but we tried very different riding positions,” said Casey Stoner. “It seems to be more difficult to get a decent lap time on the harder tyres, having made my fastest time on an older soft tyre, but our consistency seems to be very good also with the hardest compound. We’ve been trying to get a little bit more grip and turning out of the bike and work on set-up for this circuit, focusing on race set-up. It’s nice to be so close to the season and at the final test, I’m just pleased the team reached here safely and there were no casualties back in the HRC Headquarters in Saitama, my thoughts are with all the people in Japan”.

MotoGP Qatar test - Yamaha's closer than in Sepang

By Toni M.

ben spies yamaha losail day 1

Ben Spies and Jorge Lorenzo were encouraged by their 4th and 5th positions, with the American rider just 0.292secs from the Honda trio in the final pre-season MotoGP test in Qatar.

“We made the bike go in a pretty good direction today and hopefully we can get a little bit more out of it. We want to try another tyre tomorrow that we haven’t used yet, all in all it’s been a good first session,
” said Spies. “The bike seems to be closer to the front than Malaysia and I’ve got pretty good expectations after the first day. The track is a lot more flowing here which suits our bike well; I think this should be a good track for us.”

Jorge Lorenzo: “We tried a few different things on some corners today to try to make the bike more stable when I open the throttle; in almost all the gears we have done a good job. It seems we are closer to the Honda guys than in Sepang so I’m happy. We are going to continue and try a few different things tomorrow to try and find some more grip as well.”

The reigning World Champion finished second in last year’s Qatar race behind Valentino Rossi, while Spies debuted to an excellent fifth on the satellite Yamaha M1.

MotoGP Qatar - Both factory Ducati riders say "not bad" after day 1

By Toni M.

rossi losail day 1

Both Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden were able to reduce their lap times in this first session of night testing at the Losail circuit. Both riders made it into the top ten, eighth and ninth respectively and were also finally less than a second from Dani Pedrosa, who was the top rider of the night with his formidable Honda.

The Italian champion who has been struggling during the pre-season tests also suffered his first fall from his machine, but luckily didn’t pick up any physical consequences and was even able to joke about it.

“It wasn’t bad for a first day. I was able to ride the bike better, and I enjoyed myself. Although I was just eighth, my times aren’t too far from the top: seven tenths is still a big difference, but anyway it’s progress, considering that I did my best time with a very used tyre. We worked well on the settings, even if in a couple parts of the circuit I’m still not fast enough, and we’ll have to try some more solutions tomorrow. As for the shoulder, I’m happy because I have a little more strength, and that enables me to ride better. “

MotoGP Qatar Test : Rossi on Top

By Toni M.

rossi

The night test in Qatar was lead by Valentino Rossi who continues to dominate in this year’s MotoGP pre-season testing. The Italian Yamaha rider led the entire test except when he stopped for dinner and a massage, and Casey Stoner and Ben Spies out lapped him. Finished his dinner break Rossi went out and did a best lap in 1.55.402 in the final minutes of the session in warm, but very damp conditions.

Casey Stoner was second, a little more than three tenths of second from Rossi, but stopped before the end of the test with problems on his GP10 according to Ducati team manager Vitto Guareschi who called in on Italian TV show Griglia di Partenza. Stoner’s best lap was done on a used tire that already had 34 laps on it.

Ben Spies was third with his satellite Yamaha. The American continues to impress everyone in the paddock and finished 0.553s from Rossi, but suffered a small crash in the final hour of the test, but fortunately did not injure himself.

MotoGP - Jorge Lorenzo confirms he'll be in Qatar

By Toni M.

jorge lorenzo

Jorge Lorenzo has confirmed via his Twitter and Facebook pages that he’s been given the green light by his doctor to take part in this week’s final pre-season MotoGP test in Qatar.

The Spaniard has been doubtful that he would be able to test in Qatar after fracturing his first metacarpal and dislocating his thumb in a training incident last February.

Jorge Lorenzo:

“Today we are leaving for Qatar for the last Winter test. I think that it is important that we are there. The fracture happened less than five weeks ago, but we could not have missed this last test because it would have been negative for our preparation; we are not far from the first race of the season! The doctor has made a special carbon fibre protection and Dainese have modified my glove, in order to further protect the fracture, so we will see how we get on.”
