Winery tours on a motorcycle

By Alison in: Tourism

vineyard view

Have you always wanted to do a motorcycle wine tour? It’s not easy to plan, considering you’ll either have to limit your wine tasting or be a passenger while someone else gets to do the riding. It’s not previously an argument we’ve considered among our posts on motorcycle tours (having seen some of the more extreme motorcycle itineraries people do). But after a comment from Matt from Motobasturds.com, we thought we’d take a closer look.

Matt reckons the TpR Revolutionary Road is just the kind of bike you want as you get older, so you can stop and taste the wine along the way. Doing a motorcycle winery tours search, a few Australian sites come up (hardly surprising…) and there are also motorcycle tours included for California.

If you’re planning on anything like this, try the Harley Davidson motorcycle winery tour in Australia, the Vineyard Riders tours around the Napa Valley or even a suggestion to hire a motorcycle in Sicily. If you really want to test yourself but must do so on two wheels, try bicycle winery tours with New Zealand wine bike tours or even a cycling Niagara wine tour. If you’ve got your own experiences to share, let us know and we’ll be happy to post your motorcycle tour suggestions!

2010 Elefantentreffen live pics: one snowy motorcycle tour

By Alison in: Tourism Wallpapers

Elefantentreffen 2010 return

Did we mention that it has been a very cold winter in Europe? Particularly if you wanted to go motorcycling. Here are live pics from the guys at Motoblog.it who participated in the legendary (and freezing) Elefantetreffen mega-tour in the snow. As you can see from the pics, this year was very snowy and we imagine the camaraderie was in reverse proportion to the sub-zero temperatures. This is not just a photo of the day segment, we think any motorcycle tour pics after this will have to be something special to be able to compete with all that snow!

Motorcycle tours to the Arctic: Telegraph Creek itinerary

By Alison in: Tourism Ktm Bmw

This motorcycle tour takes us through British Columbia, to Telegraph Creek. It’s a detour on an itinerary for the West Canadian Arctic, and if you love the combination of scenery and riding, this video is for you. The bikes in question are a BMW R1200 GS Adventure, the KTM 990 Adventure and the BMW F800 GS. One of the first pieces of advice is not to forget the wine for a little celebratory drink at the destination. My kind of tour…

Motorcycle tour of France and Germany

By Alison in: Tourism Wallpapers

Motorcycle tour France and Germany

This wonderful gallery of a summer motorcycle tour through France and Germany shows the roads and landscape that can be enjoyed on a bike travelling through Alsace, the Maginot Line, the Ardennes and the Black Forest. The tour outlined in the pics below took 14 days to complete, visiting nearly 5,000 kilometres of European countryside, starting in northern Italy before travelling north in a kind of circle.

The trip takes in historically and culturally significant sites in recent European history, as well as some truly beautiful scenery. A GPS unit turns out to be the best way to plan this sort of itinerary, without to many stops to consult maps and ask for directions.

It’s really for the rider to decide on the type of bike, we expect you’d be taking your favourite two wheeled machine. This particular tour used a Ducati Multistrada, and you’re best to choose a comfortable motorcycle that will adapt to most riding conditions. Have a look at the lovely photos below and tell us what your favourite motorcycle itinerary is.

Fire and ice: Michael Martin's world tour with a BMW R 1200 GS

By Alison in: Bmw

BMW world fire and ice desert tour

Fancy a ride through the volcanic deserts of Iceland? Or how about the ice deserts of Northern Siberia? Motorcycle adventurer and desert expert Michael Martin will be doing just that this year, as he tours the world’s major ice and volcanic deserts in a project called “Planet Desert”.

Martin’s vehicle of choice for his tour is the BMW R 1200 GS, after also have travelling deserts in Asia, Australia and America. The trip will become a kind of documentary as Martin focuses on the people who live in the extreme conditions of these areas, and the changing climactic conditions of the world.

Martin is geographer and will go to some regions he has already visited, while also travelling to the Patagonian desert, the Tibetan Chang Tang desert and other places, before heading to the ice deserts of Antarctica.

Vespa GTS 300 Super US food and photography tour by Clay Enos

By Alison in: Scooters Tourism Vespa

Vespa GTS 300 Super US tour

In a kind of slow food-style Vespa tour of the US, photographer Clay Enos is travelling from New York to Vancouver on a Vespa GTS 300 Super this summer. The purpose of the motorcycle tour is to take in the local scenes of the US, while indulging in local produce and following the Eat Well Guide to the US.

Clay Enos is a film photographer who often works with Zack Snyder, but has decided to have a long, not-so-lazy summer of touring the US on a scooter. He says:

My intent is to spend the Summer before working as the still-photographer on the next Zack Snyder film traveling on a Vespa GTS 300 Super between New York and Vancouver, BC. The basic idea is to rarely go more than 150 miles on any given day, eat and support organic, locally produced and harvested foods, pop into Apple stores and Vespa dealerships to give my existing photography presentation, and make new pictures and portraits that will be blogged and geo-tagged along the way using my Nikon. The emphasis is on moving slowly and engaging the country that exists away from the freeways. This framework is simple, spontaneous and privileges local authenticity and uniqueness rather than the constructed and cliché.

Touring Romania by motorcycle: two weeks in Dracula's land

By Alison in: Various

Romania: due settimane nella terra di Dracula

We posted on some possible destinations for motorcycle tours, but looking at these pics we really should have included Transylvania, in Romania, among the options. An Italian tour company, Motovacanze.it is planning an August motorcycle holiday in Romania taking in the wild landscape of the mountains, and visiting castles, monasteries and historic towns.

The motorcycle itinerary includes stunning natural scenery with a touch of culture, exploring the history of Eastern Europe and the mythical figure of Count Dracula. After starting in Budapest, the tour stops for a day in the Transylvania capital of Cluj Napoca, before moving south towards the historic towns of Alba Julia, Sighisoara, Sibiu and Brasov. The itinerary includes visits to the Hunedoara, Peles and Bran castles.

From Brasov, travelling east, there is the opportunity for a visit to the sunflowered plains of the Danube, to reach Tulcea, the last city before the Danube Delta. A boat trip to explore the flora and fauna of this unique environment is included.

Top motorcycle trips worldwide

By Alison in: Various

Lake landscape motorcycle

Most of us probably have in mind an ideal motorcycle tour we’d like to do: from how adventurous to how luxurious, on which continent, whether desert or mountainous and the myriad other landscapes available.

But given that we’re all spoilt for choice, we thought we’d check out some of the destinations for the best motorcycle itineraries around. As all the world’s continents offer many touring options, you’re probably better to choose what kind of trip you want, and where you can go to do that.

For desert riding, the Mojave in California, the Outback in Australia and the Gobi desert in Mongolia are recommended, and we’ve also seen the landscape in Tunisia for motorcycle tours as well.
