BMW Unscripted: around the world with Tiffany Coates

By Alison

BMW’s original “Unscripted” videos showed mostly BMW cars and their owners doing weird and wonderful stuff in various parts of the world, but this time the company has decided to feature a female rider, Tiffany Coates, and her trusty BMW R80GS. The bike, called Thelma (from Thelma and Louise??), has taken its rider across five continents with Coates probably being an authority on great motorcycle itineraries. Apart from a novel and interesting perspective on life that deserves some respect, this video includes some stunning scenery as well. Enjoy.

Photo of the day: Stelvio Pass under snow

By Alison

Stelvio Pass snow motorcycling

So while we’re enjoying the last throws of summer in Europe and hopefully we’ll get another few months of riding in yet, this photo is a reminder of what can happen when you leave your summer alpine motorcycle excursion to late. This group of intrepid Italians took to the legendary Stelvio Pass, only to find it got a little chilly up there.

Send your funny, bizarre or surprising pics to us and we’ll post them, with your name. We’d love to share what you guys find in the world of motorcycling! Send to: pics@twowheelsblog.com.

No motorcycling in the Dolomites: Italy closes Dolomite mountain passes to traffic

By Alison

Moto Guzzi Stelvio 1200 4V NTX sulle Dolomiti

If you were planning on a beautiful Dolomites mountain motorcycling tour for summer you can forget it because the regional Trentino government in Italy is banning traffic on its high mountain pass routes, including motorcycles in the ban. According to reports from Italy, high altitude passes and the landscapes that go with them would now be accessible only by bus, described as an “alternative transport mode”.

There is still hope for motorcyclists passionate about their summer mountain tours, as not all local authorities agree with the decision from the point of view of the local tourism economy. More high profile campaigners though are joining the ‘no cars’ chorus, for example famous mountaineer Reinhold Messner, who says: “Let’s leave space to the cyclists and hikers, at least during the main daylight hours, from 9am to 3pm, for example, so that they can fully enjoy the natural beauty.”

While many motorcyclists would be happy to see the cars off the road, they will be loath to give up a great Italian passtime of summer mountain motorcycling. The only two-wheel option it appears will be the bicycle..

Winery tours on a motorcycle

By Alison

vineyard view

Have you always wanted to do a motorcycle wine tour? It’s not easy to plan, considering you’ll either have to limit your wine tasting or be a passenger while someone else gets to do the riding. It’s not previously an argument we’ve considered among our posts on motorcycle tours (having seen some of the more extreme motorcycle itineraries people do). But after a comment from Matt from Motobasturds.com, we thought we’d take a closer look.

Matt reckons the TpR Revolutionary Road is just the kind of bike you want as you get older, so you can stop and taste the wine along the way. Doing a motorcycle winery tours search, a few Australian sites come up (hardly surprising…) and there are also motorcycle tours included for California.

If you’re planning on anything like this, try the Harley Davidson motorcycle winery tour in Australia, the Vineyard Riders tours around the Napa Valley or even a suggestion to hire a motorcycle in Sicily. If you really want to test yourself but must do so on two wheels, try bicycle winery tours with New Zealand wine bike tours or even a cycling Niagara wine tour. If you’ve got your own experiences to share, let us know and we’ll be happy to post your motorcycle tour suggestions!

2010 Elefantentreffen live pics: one snowy motorcycle tour

By Alison

Elefantentreffen 2010 return

Did we mention that it has been a very cold winter in Europe? Particularly if you wanted to go motorcycling. Here are live pics from the guys at Motoblog.it who participated in the legendary (and freezing) Elefantetreffen mega-tour in the snow. As you can see from the pics, this year was very snowy and we imagine the camaraderie was in reverse proportion to the sub-zero temperatures. This is not just a photo of the day segment, we think any motorcycle tour pics after this will have to be something special to be able to compete with all that snow!

Motorcycle tours to the Arctic: Telegraph Creek itinerary

By Alison

This motorcycle tour takes us through British Columbia, to Telegraph Creek. It’s a detour on an itinerary for the West Canadian Arctic, and if you love the combination of scenery and riding, this video is for you. The bikes in question are a BMW R1200 GS Adventure, the KTM 990 Adventure and the BMW F800 GS. One of the first pieces of advice is not to forget the wine for a little celebratory drink at the destination. My kind of tour…

Your pics: Amalfi Coast by motorcycle

Amalfi Coast by motorcycle

If you want a little Dolce Vita by motorcycle, check out these pics of a ride around the Amalfi Coast. The pics come from Luca and show the Amalfi Coast and the Campotosto Lake in Italy. One of the best ways to travel the Amalfi Coast is by motorcycle, as you can stop along the way and really take in the view. Beats the bus, any day.

Motorcycle tour of France and Germany

By Alison

Motorcycle tour France and Germany

This wonderful gallery of a summer motorcycle tour through France and Germany shows the roads and landscape that can be enjoyed on a bike travelling through Alsace, the Maginot Line, the Ardennes and the Black Forest. The tour outlined in the pics below took 14 days to complete, visiting nearly 5,000 kilometres of European countryside, starting in northern Italy before travelling north in a kind of circle.

The trip takes in historically and culturally significant sites in recent European history, as well as some truly beautiful scenery. A GPS unit turns out to be the best way to plan this sort of itinerary, without to many stops to consult maps and ask for directions.

It’s really for the rider to decide on the type of bike, we expect you’d be taking your favourite two wheeled machine. This particular tour used a Ducati Multistrada, and you’re best to choose a comfortable motorcycle that will adapt to most riding conditions. Have a look at the lovely photos below and tell us what your favourite motorcycle itinerary is.

Fire and ice: Michael Martin's world tour with a BMW R 1200 GS

By Alison

BMW world fire and ice desert tour

Fancy a ride through the volcanic deserts of Iceland? Or how about the ice deserts of Northern Siberia? Motorcycle adventurer and desert expert Michael Martin will be doing just that this year, as he tours the world’s major ice and volcanic deserts in a project called “Planet Desert”.

Martin’s vehicle of choice for his tour is the BMW R 1200 GS, after also have travelling deserts in Asia, Australia and America. The trip will become a kind of documentary as Martin focuses on the people who live in the extreme conditions of these areas, and the changing climactic conditions of the world.

Martin is geographer and will go to some regions he has already visited, while also travelling to the Patagonian desert, the Tibetan Chang Tang desert and other places, before heading to the ice deserts of Antarctica.
