Vespa GTS 300 Super US food and photography tour by Clay Enos

Vespa GTS 300 Super US tour

In a kind of slow food-style Vespa tour of the US, photographer Clay Enos is travelling from New York to Vancouver on a Vespa GTS 300 Super this summer. The purpose of the motorcycle tour is to take in the local scenes of the US, while indulging in local produce and following the Eat Well Guide to the US.

Clay Enos is a film photographer who often works with Zack Snyder, but has decided to have a long, not-so-lazy summer of touring the US on a scooter. He says:

My intent is to spend the Summer before working as the still-photographer on the next Zack Snyder film traveling on a Vespa GTS 300 Super between New York and Vancouver, BC. The basic idea is to rarely go more than 150 miles on any given day, eat and support organic, locally produced and harvested foods, pop into Apple stores and Vespa dealerships to give my existing photography presentation, and make new pictures and portraits that will be blogged and geo-tagged along the way using my Nikon. The emphasis is on moving slowly and engaging the country that exists away from the freeways. This framework is simple, spontaneous and privileges local authenticity and uniqueness rather than the constructed and cliché.

Touring Romania by motorcycle: two weeks in Dracula's land

By Alison

Romania: due settimane nella terra di Dracula

We posted on some possible destinations for motorcycle tours, but looking at these pics we really should have included Transylvania, in Romania, among the options. An Italian tour company, Motovacanze.it is planning an August motorcycle holiday in Romania taking in the wild landscape of the mountains, and visiting castles, monasteries and historic towns.

The motorcycle itinerary includes stunning natural scenery with a touch of culture, exploring the history of Eastern Europe and the mythical figure of Count Dracula. After starting in Budapest, the tour stops for a day in the Transylvania capital of Cluj Napoca, before moving south towards the historic towns of Alba Julia, Sighisoara, Sibiu and Brasov. The itinerary includes visits to the Hunedoara, Peles and Bran castles.

From Brasov, travelling east, there is the opportunity for a visit to the sunflowered plains of the Danube, to reach Tulcea, the last city before the Danube Delta. A boat trip to explore the flora and fauna of this unique environment is included.

Top motorcycle trips worldwide

Lake landscape motorcycle

Most of us probably have in mind an ideal motorcycle tour we’d like to do: from how adventurous to how luxurious, on which continent, whether desert or mountainous and the myriad other landscapes available.

But given that we’re all spoilt for choice, we thought we’d check out some of the destinations for the best motorcycle itineraries around. As all the world’s continents offer many touring options, you’re probably better to choose what kind of trip you want, and where you can go to do that.

For desert riding, the Mojave in California, the Outback in Australia and the Gobi desert in Mongolia are recommended, and we’ve also seen the landscape in Tunisia for motorcycle tours as well.

From Sydney to London on a postal bike

By Alison

Sydney to London postal bike

There are plenty of legendary world motorcycle trips being completed by people to make multiple books and films over the next few years, but this one we just had to share. One intrepid traveller is making his way from Sydney to London on a postal bike.

Currently somewhere between India and the rest of the Middle East, Nathan Millward is travelling with a used postie bike to get from Australia back to his native England, with a 105cc engine and an “80kmh flat-out-downhill, wind-behind-us top speed”.

Nathan has christened his trustie little postal bike “Dot” and says there are some significant advantages to this kind of vehicle. For a start, it’s extremely fuel efficient, and secondly it’s simple mechanics mean if he can’t fix it, someone nearby usually can.

As Nathan says: “What’s more proper than a bike giving all it’s got, being tested to its limit every day and yet still going fantastically strong?” He says that if Dot can’t get him home, nothing can. Read more on the Sydney Morning Herald.

A firebalde over Tunisian sand dunes: travel videos

By Alison

After seeing some of the beautiful pics of the Fireblade tour through the Sahara in Tunisia, here are some videos that again come from smontic, showing the amazing itinerary.

Divided into three parts, the films are a real travel diary and, as you would expect, show some of the inspiring landscape that you get only on a solitary ride with your motorcycle. They might also give you some tips about this kind of motorcycle tour if you’re planning on disappearing into the Sahara desert for a ride.

The first video shows the departure and travelling north, the second shows the desert and travelling through sand, and the third shows the stunning mountains of Dahr and Fejaj. Second and third films after the jump.

Tunisia on a Fireblade: your motorcycle pics

By Alison

Tunisia su una Fireblade

The text from these photos goes: “Hi everyone, I’m home and I just unpacked the suitcases and have eaten my first plate of spaghetti. It’s really the end. The trip is over and I can’t manage to get my head around it. Maybe because I can still smell the sand and still see the heat in front of my eyes.”

Other pics and stories of this motorcycle tour of Tunisia are on Adventure Rider, and thanks to smontic for the tip.

Send your funny, bizarre or surprising pics to us and we’ll post them, with your name. We’d love to share what you guys find in the world of motorcycling! Send to: pics@twowheelsblog.com.

In the footsteps of Don Quixote by motorcycle

By Alison

Travelling La Mancha by motorcycle

While many motorcyclists see South America as the mecca of legendary motorcycling, Jeff Buchanan has gone right back to Spanish roots, and retraced the steps of mythical literary figure Don Quixote, by motorcycle.

Travelling through the La Mancha region to the south and east of Madrid, they tour the region brought to life by Cervantes’ fictional hero, and in so doing indulge in literary history in stunning landscapes.

While it may be difficult to pay homage to the significance of this literary work, giving birth to what we know as the novel, Buchanan completes a motorcycle itinerary in Spain, reliving episodes from the book. He says:

If ever there was a literary personage that possesses the wanderlust so prevalent in the consciousness of motorcyclists, it is Quixote. The self-proclaimed knight-errant, accompanied by a devoted squire, Sancho Panza, on his donkey, just two misfits searching for purpose and adventure in an indifferent world.

For full details on this amazing motorcycle tour, see “A Man in La Mancha” and send the guys at Ultimate Motorcycling an email.

Travelling the world with a motorcycle: Gionata Nencini celebrates four years of worldwide motorcycle travel

By Alison

On May 8th, Italian motorcyclist Gionata Nencini celebrated four years of two wheel adventuring on the road. When he first left for what became a world tour, Nencini was 21 years old, he had 2,200 euros in his pocket and a vague idea of travelling by motorcycle. Today he has so far covered approximately 170,000 kilometres, visited 26 countries across four continents and spent more than 1,461 days travelling with nine punctures.

The trip is less about numbers and statistics, and more about a personal project that was inspired by various books Nencini had read and certain ideals that would be easy to give up for the comfort of society.

Gionata’s trip doesn’t have much to do with the Long Way Round, as he wants to tell his story and show people what it really means to travel and see the world, and the people who live in it. He believes that motorcycle travel can be done by anyone, without support teams, sponsors and specialist knowledge; he is a traveller, not a professional rider.

Motorcycle tours in Italy: Tuscan itineraries with Garfagnana Bikers

By Alison

Garfagnana Bikers
In a rare move of welcoming motorcyclists and their touring activities, Garfagnana Bikers is an interesting initiative from the Italian mountain community of Garfagnana, which is seeking to promote tourism in the area and increase the presence of motorcycle touring.

The Tuscan territory is perfect for a motorcycle itinerary in Italy, enjoying beautiful landscapes. Varied panoramas, traditional culture, ancient architecture and mountain roads make for some great riding, with high altitude passes and the possibility of visiting Tuscan cities by motorcycle.

The Garfagnana Bikers project has developed a series of tours to experience the different elements of an itinerary around these parts, with accommodation welcoming motorcyclists and providing facilities such as covered parking, lockers for motorcycle gear, tools for basic maintenance and much more.

Your pics: touring Italy on a motorcycle, the Val d'Adige

By Alison

Hyper giretto in Val d'Adige

These photos come from reader Federico and his motorcycle tour of Italy’s Val d’Adige. He often takes his trusty hypermotard for a ride, saying “when passion calls, the motorcyclist responds”. This tour through the Dolomites looks a little cold, with 500 km of riding moutain roads.

If you’ve got a favourite tour, we’re happy to share it. Send your funny, bizarre or surprising pics to us and we’ll post them, with your name. We’d love to share what you guys find in the world of motorcycling! Send to: pics@twowheelsblog.com.
