Newbie World Superbike team Red Devils Roma has continued their preparation for the 2012 with another two day test session at Vallelunga last weekend.
Niccolò Canepa seemed particularly pleased with the results of this latest test, considering the cold weather front that hit the Italian pennisula Friday evening, as he set a best unofficial lap time of 1’37”3 with race tires and with a softer tire lapped in 1’36”5.
“We had a very good couple of days testing, which represents a good starting point for the 2012 season,” said Canepa. “In just a couple of days we tested a lot of new things and I did more than 90 laps. On Sunday afternoon I tried a few fast laps and times dropped considerably. With the softest tire I lapped in 1′36″5 and this was particularly satisfying not only because of my performance , but also because I’m convinced we can do a lot better when we are further along with the work. I know there’s still a lot more to do and I still don’t feel completely comfortable on the bike yeat, but we’ll have another couple of days in Australia to work on improving this aspect. At Phillip Island I’ll also have a chance pace myself against my rivals so we’ll know where we are, but I’m leaving for Australia feeling optimistic. It’s going to be a tough and hard world championship, but this will push me to give my best.”

With just a little over a month to go before the World Superbike season opener at Phillip Island, newbie World Superbike squad Ducati Roma Team has changed its name and will be running under the banner of Red Devils Roma Team.
Red Devils Roma Team was born on the ashes of former Supersonic Racing that was taken over by Andrea Petricca when the original team decided to pull out of the championship at the end of last season.
Petricca says he changed the name because it reminded him of the start of his own personal career: “Red Devils is a name that is familiar from the start of my career and it brings to mind riders like Aldeo Presciutti who raced and won under this name. We decided to change so as also to be able to carry the name of our city around the world in an important season that will see us take part in one of the most prestigious championships in the world.”
Niccolò Canepa, the team’s sole rider will be testing at Vallelunga for two days this weekend before heading to Australia for the first official Superbike tests that take place February 20-21 at Phillip Island.
Ducati Team Roma was at the Italian circuit of Vallelunga last Saturday for another private test after their previous one at Misano to prepare for their 2012 debut season in World Superbikes.
Fortunately the weather held up and Niccolò Canepa was able to work on the electronics of his Ducati 1198, the team also debuted their new Superstock 1000 FIM Cup rider, 22-year old Andrzej Chmielewski.
Niccolò Canepa: “Unfortunately we didn’t have that much time at our disposal and in the afternoon there were many other bikes on the track and I couldn’t push as much as I wanted too. I still took advantage of the day to work on suspensions and on the electronics of my Ducati, continuing the work we started at Misano. Certainly we have to do other tests to do in order to be ready for the start of the World Superbike season and I know that the team is working on that. I’m working well with my team and our Ducati is improving performance wise. I’d like thank all the fans and sponsors who joined us at Vallelunga and we will do our best not to disappoint them. “
Andrzej Chmielewski: “It was my first time with Ducati Rome and with my new bike. I am very pleased and honored to become part of this team that has already shown great professionalism and competence. I was out of racing for two years and then I will certainly need other practice sessions to get back in shape. My Ducati is very powerful and fantastic to rider . I’m sure we’ll have a lot of fun next year in Superstock and I’d like to thank Andrea Petricca for giving me this great opportunity.

Ducati Roma Team was born on the ashes of Supersonic Racing and the new World Superbike team will be fielding former MotoGP, Moto2 rider, Superstock 1000 FIM Cup rider Niccolò Canepa in the 2012 Superbike championship.
Canepa won the 2007 Superstock championship and finished fifth overall in 2011, after switching during the season from the Kawasaki GoEleven team to the Lazio Motorsport Ducati squad.
The Italian spent the last three days of October at the Misano Adriatico circuit familiarizing with the Ducati 1098R Superbike and despite unfavourably cold weather conditions, he reported that he was able to lap under the 1.37 barrier several times on hard race tires.
The team worked on general set-up, suspensions, electronics and the ride-by-wire system which Canepa has already used in 2008 when he wildcarded for the now defunct Ducati Xerox factory at Brno (13th and DNF) and when he rode for MotoGP Pramac Ducati team in 2009.

Sometimes things happen faster than what we expect them to be, as in the case of Niccolò Canepa. Just yesterday we told you that the Italian was looking for a new ride and presto chango, today we found out that he’s been picked up by Superstock Go Eleven Team for the 2011 season.
Canepa will be riding the new Kawasaki ZX10R, after the team’s switch from KTM to the Japanese marque.
“The Go Eleven project has won me over, everyone is very enthusiastic about it and they all want to do well. I have decided to come back to Superstock, despite receiving offers to stay in Moto2 [now he had offers?] and despite the fact that the 2010 season was conditioned by the budget problems of the team I raced for. I think this is the right environment to revitalize my career and as soon as possible arrive in World Superbike, my ‘first love’ and where I made my debut when I was Ducati test-rider. I believe that this team has the right structure and personnel to work well on the new Kawasaki, which until now I’ve only been able to admire at the EICMA show, but I hope to be able to test it soon”.

Niccolò Canepa is only 22-years-old, but the last two seasons he’s had, would have made anyone stop and think, but the Italian rider is still thinking positive and looking to find a new ride for 2011, in another championship series.
After winning the FIM Superstock 1000 championship in 2007 with the Ducati Xerox Junior Team, Canepa found himself as a Ducati/BridgestoneMotoGP test rider in 2008 getting the opportunity to ride in two WSBK rounds as a wildcard with the Ducati Xerox factory team, but the Genoan wanted more and in 2009 his manager, the foxy Carlo Pernat, found him a spot in the big league with Pramac Ducati.
Canepa finished 16th in the standings, missing the final three races due to a hand injury was later dropped in favour of the upcoming, and what everyone thought at that time, a better riding Aleix Espargaro. Finding himself without a ride in MotoGP, Canepa turned to the new Moto2 series and was luckless even there. His RSM Scot Racing team folded with big financial problems after 10 rounds, he was then picked up by Bimota M Racing, but after just two races, got the axe.

More musical chairs in Moto2. Niccolò Canepa who started the season with RSM Scot Racing on a Scot Force GP210 until Rapid Inside NCS withdrew their support from the Sammarinese team, then rode a Suter MMX at Brno until the team folded under financial difficulties. Canepa then found a place with Bimota-M Racing and took part in the Misano Adriatico and Aragon rounds, but now finds himself without a team again after being axed.
The unlucky Italian will be replaced at this weekend’s Moto2 round at Motegi by 28 year old Hiromichi Kunikawa, who’ll finish the season with the Rimini based team.
Kunikwawa is currently 5th in the All Japan ST600 series where he rides a Honda CBR 600RR for team 92R Hirano.

RSM Scot Racing is officially off the Moto2 roster and Niccolò Canepa who lost his ride after the Sammarinese team pulled out after financial woes, will debut with a new team at Misano Adriatico called M Racing.
The Italian who raced in MotoGP in 2009 and has yet to score a point this season in Moto2 will be riding a Bimota HB4. The 21 year old raced a Force GP210 for nine rounds, a Suter MMX at Brno and was force to skip the Indianapolis GP.
Former Scot Racing team mate Alex de Angelis is riding for JiR Racing this weekend.

Just yesterday we revealed that RSM Scot Racing was having economic problems and that Rapid Inside NCS had announced the end of their cooperation with the team (they supplied the frame) and that a court order had been issued and that the Sammarinese team was at risk of skipping this weekend’s Brno GP.
However Mularoni’s Moto2 team seems to have momentarily solved their woes and will be present in the Czech Republic and according to today’s press release Niccolò Canepa will be riding a full fledged Moto2 Suter Racing bike instead of their GP210 Force machine.
Emanuele Ventura (Technical Director): “Suter assured us a competitive bike, updated with all the solutions resulting from the experience collected in the first part of the Championship. It is a new bike for us, but Suter technical personnel will support our crew at this GP, to minimise the time necessary to us to study it and allow Niccolò to ride at his best”.
There is no mention if they will be replacing Andrew Pitt (the unlucky Aussie rider broke his collarbone in three places during race 2 of the BSB Championship round at Brands Hatch last weekend) who was supposed to make his Moto2 debut at Brno in place of Alex de Angelis who is currently subbing for injured Hiroshi Aoyama in MotoGP.

Alex De Angelis has finally come to an agreement with Scot Racing to ride their prototype bike next season in the Moto2 category in its first ever season next year.
The Sammarinese has signed a one year contract and an option for 2011 with Cirano Mulroni’s Republic of San Marino based squad, who has now completed their rider line up after having already signed up another former MotoGP rider Niccolò Canepa back in November.

Niccolò Canepa will be in the new Moto2 series next season. Canepa has signed a one year contract with Cirano Mularoni’s Scot Racing.
Canepa in 2007 won the Superstock 1000 World Championship and then become a Ducati test rider 2008 and Ducati gave him chance in MotoGP with Paramc Ducati, but the rookie did not live up to expectations and was also injured in a crash at Phillip Island that forced him to miss the final three races, finishing a lowly 16th in the Championship standings and was dropped by Pramac who preferred Aleix Espargaro.
The Italian rider was first considered by Herve Poncharal’s Moto 2 team and then by Andrea Dosoli of Hayate Moto2, instead the surprise call came from Team Scot.
Canepa’s crewchief will be Emanuele Ventura who worked with Hiroshi Aoyama, the 2009 250cc World Champion.
Niccolò Canepa has had very difficult rookie season, very rarely making it in the top ten and struggling to keep his job until the end of the season and now the Italian will miss the season finale and his last race in MotoGP.
The unlucky rider who has already missed Phillip Island and Sepang GP’s because of an arm injury picked during free practice at the Australian GP underwent a skin transplant and was scheduled to return for the final race, but was advised by doctors to rest his arm more in order to avoid the wound to reopen.
Niccolò Canepa:
“I am very sad as I will not be able to step on track this weekend at Valencia. I really cared about competing in this last Grand Prix of the season to end it with a good result. I want to thank the Pramac Racing Team, Paolo Campinoti and Ducati Corse for this fantastic experience I have lived. Now I will have to think about getting back at the best physical conditions and go back on track whichever will be my next sport adventure.”
Paolo Campinoti Pramac Ducati Team Manager:
“We are very sad that Niccolò will not make it to race with us this last Grand Prix of the season. Last year he has done a quite good job here during the first winter test and he could have achieved a good result also in this occasion. We would like to thank him for the work done this year and we wish him the best of luck for a future rich of success whichever road he will take. He is a talented rider who has to accumulate more experience to come back at the top level. His place will be taken once again by Aleix Espargarò: in every race he has competed with us this season he has done quite well and we confide he will be able to do the same this weekend in Valencia.”
