The Ossa TR280i trial bike debuted at the 2009 EICMA show as the first model in the revival of the Spanish offroad motorcycle brand. After heading to international trial bike competitions and hitting the market last year, a new version is available which Ossa describes as the “world’s lightest trial bike”.
Updates to the TR280i make it lighter, more ergonomical and agile, with new fork settings, smoother and more progressive power delivery and a better steering angle. Better air circulation and engine protection has been achieved with a new air box cap. MCN reports that upside-down forks were considered which are included in the spec list, but which can’t be seen in the pics. According to an Ossa spokesperson, the technology is still being refined.
The revival of the Ossa Spanish offroad bike brand will see the new Ossa TR280i compete in next year’s World Trial Championship after success at the trial nations event in Polond last weekend. Spain won for the seventh year in a row and the new Ossa trial team was presented at the event. The TR280i is a niche product but like all niche products, it has amazing capabilities and a loyal following. Deliveries of the first models will start in October this year.
The new Ossa trial bike showed off its prowess at the nations event with Marc Colomer, tester and developer, taking the reins of what should be the market’s lightest trial bike around. Ossa management had a meeting with FIM to present its team and its bike, and the upshot is we’ll be seeing a new competitor racing. Ossa will most likely have to make a few changes to its TR280i as its lighter than what regulations allow, but surely it’s easier to make a bike heavier than to get its weight down. Expect to see some excitement next year.

The Ossa TR280i, which we saw as a trial prototype at the 2009 EICMA show, has gone into production and will be going on sale from August this year. Ossa will produce 1,250 TR280i units this year, available in Europe, Australia and New Zealand, while plans are to increase production to about 3,000 units in 2011.
A new off-road Ossa bike will also be on show at the 2010 EICMA show in Milan. The TR280i has a 280cc, two stroke engine with electronic ignition. Other features include a monobloc carter and innovative cooling system, which in theory allow for easy engine modifications to be performed. Here is the Ossa TR-i 280 prototype, which we first mentioned in October with news of the Ossa brand relaunch. The Spanish company was mostly active in the off-road and trial segments from the 1960’s to the 1980’s, and here is its TR280i trial model ready to roll off the production line before June next year.
The TR280i is a 280cc, two-stroke with electronic ignition, and a focus on weight distribution and correct engine cooling. The motor is compact, thanks to the monobloc carter, and the cooling unit is angled slightly backwards, using concepts from both enduro and trial models. Given this new placement and compactness, modifications to the motor can be achieved easily and economically. The fuel tank has a capacity of three litres and sits in front of the motor.
The radiator, however, is situated towards the back of the tank, and in front of the air box, which lowers the centre of gravity of the bike, but which also requires a fan cooling system as no air arrives from the front of the bike.
