Ben Spies
has set his eighth World Superbike pole position of the season at Donington Park this afternoon after doing a 1:29.846 to best Aprilia’s Max Biaggi’s 1:30.080.

Spies timing was perfect because a light rain began to fall towards the end of the session and preventing the other seven riders that made it through to final stint to try to better their times on slick tires on a slippery track.

Aprilia’s Max Biaggi’s 1′30.080 couldn’t be bettered and will start second on the grid, and Sterilgarda Ducati’s Shane Byrnes did two flying laps, which got him third on the grid. The final place on the front row went to Biaggi’s team mate Shinya Nakano.

The second row sees the two Xerox Ducati riders, Michel Fabrizio in fifth and Noriyuki Haga sixth. Carlos Checa and Guadalini Ducati’s Jakub Smrz will round out the second row.

WSBK Misano Race 1 - Spies does it again

By Toni M.

Ben Spies Misano

In today’s WSBK race 1 at the Misano World Circuit we got more for our money’s worth in a highly entertaining and difficult wet to dry, flag to flag race.

The Santamonica track had seen rain all morning but when the SBK race was lining up on the grid, it stopped raining and the race was declared wet and the entire grid started on wet tires, and on the sighting lap Troy Corser binned his BMW, hurting his shoulder and did not take part in the race.

When the red lights went out, it was Shane Byrnes who took the first place at the first curve with his private 1198 Ducati and starting distancing the rest of the riders gaining an impressive advantage while yesterday’s poleman Jakub Srmz was trailing in second.

It just wasn’t Jonathan Rea’s race. The Irishman was to start in second position was forced to start from the pit lane, when his Honda did not start up and then after gaining several positions found himself back in the pit lane when he was given a drive-through penalty and wfen he pitted his Honda for the tire change, his second bike didn’t fire up.

Max Biaggi had an excellent start but by the third lap starting slowly to loose his advantage and falling slowly behind several riders.
