While Marco Melandri is still waiting to know if he’s going to ride this year in MotoGP and if Dorna’s CEO Carmelo Espeleta will be able to place a no logo Kawasaki ZX-RR on the grid, he will also try competing again in the Speedcar Series on the new race circuit in Dubai the 27th and 28th of February.

After his wildcard appearance in Qatar, Melandri impressed many a race driver by placing 8th in Race 1 and was leading Race 2 until his car broke down due to a gear shift problem.

The Speedcar Series Championship is a racing championship where drivers compete in identical V8 620hp stock cars with no electronic aids.

Wild card MotoGP star Marco Melandri after finishing 5th in the first practice session and 4th in qualifying despite three tail spins and another spin in Race 1 that dropped the MotoGP star to the end of the field, almost took a shock victory in Race 2.

Gaining the advantage of the reverse grid in the second race, Melandri came within four laps of a Speedcar Series victory under the lights at Losail in Qatar on Saturday night, but a mechanical failure took him out, handing the victory to Vitantonio Liuzzi.

Melandri, who started only his second-ever car race from pole position, rocketed away at the start and built up a 7.5sec lead by lap nine, which was when Liuzzi passed Thomas Biagi for second place.

MotoGP rider Marco Melandri will be joining the Speedcar Series’ first night race at the Losail International Circuit on 12-14 February.

The Italian, who is seems to be ready to sit out this season in MotoGP racing following the exit of Kawasaki from the sport, will team up with former F1 driver Heinz-Harald Frentzen, driving for Team Lavaggi at the Losail circuit.

Also partecipating will be Jean Alesi, Johnny Herbert, Jacques Villeneuve, Stefan Johansson, Gianni Morbidelli, and Vitantonio Liuzzi.
